7 signs that you should be a professional photographer

Found this in my RSS inbox this morning and thought it would be good for conversation here too.

What I thought was most interesting though is what he left out - "you take good photos."  The list is specific to photographers but really could apply to someone starting any type of business.

photographic ability and to lesser degree, photographic education are essential only if one is to be considered an Artist - - - little to do with being a Professional Photographer or Businessman/woman (just about anyone can be one of them if they want to be - as long as they "regularly sell pictures", "regularly win commissions", "get a kick out of the marketing", " inspired by others’ images", "Add your Own Twist", "Understand the Technical Stuff", "and MOST IMPORTANTLY - - - "Really, Really Want to Do it").  No Image

I think it's a difference between people who enjoy photography looking to start a legitimate business and those who think "hey, I can take good pictures of my cat and I heard that wedding photographers make $500 for one day's work".

Personally, I'm just short of 3 years since I got paid for photography by someone that didn't come through friends or family.  And I got pretty excited last night when I put together my info for our accountant that I actually was in the black last year, although just barely.  I think that gives me a pretty good latch onto his #7 - "you really want to do it." Cheesy Grin  Of course I also really really want to take a trip to Europe next summer.  Doesn't mean it's going to happen.  The hardest part for me is to convert that desire to do photography and web design full time into motivation to actually take the steps to make it happen.

Two quotes along those lines that I keep taped to my monitor.  No clue on who said them though.

"The principle behind weekly planning is to schedule your priorities, not to prioritize your schedule."

"The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that that they trade what they want most for what they want most at the moment."

I think education is covered in the part about knowing the technical stuff.  Does it really matter how you get your education as long as you get it?  I have formal schooling, although I didn't finish, but I learned a lot more practical knowledge in the real world and just by practicing and figuring out creative solutions to problems.  I am not saying school bad, it's just one way to get there.

Anyway, it's an interesting list.  I would say that the most important thing is wanting it.  Other things will fall into place or will be able to be attained if you really want it.  A little bit of natural talent never hurt anyone in this field though.
