Nice posts Bob.

Glad to see others like airshows. I'll have my opportunity later in the spring/summer

Bob can I ask what lens you used for these and the airshow as they look soft to me. Is it the sigma 50-500?

The angles were shot with a sigma 70-300 and the osprey with the 50-500. Both were hand held. The osprey out the window of my car which may have been still rolling.. (I'm bad about that)

If the shots look soft, it probably post or my hand holding the lens at 500mm.

Yep that would do it at 500mm. A good monopod is always an advantage for a telephoto. Reason I asked about the 50-500 is I have heard mixed reviews about it from people and wanted to know how you got on with it?

Stewart,

For the D200, I found the sigma lenses were not up to par. However, Robert Watcher handles it fine.
lenses tested, the 28-70 f 2.8, tested at the college as well, issues with focus, sometimes you need to try three.
the 70-200mm f/2.8 compared with the nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 no comparison, nikon hands down.

Results the 24-70 was returned and I ended up with the 18-70mm 3.5 nikon and the 70-200mm VR nikon, no looking back.
BTW, as with Robert, my brother has the nikon 18-200mm, what a sweet lens, sharp, I was surprised with the result.

A fellow U.K. photog to you, www.pdprince.com he shoots with a 50-500 sigma, his results are outstanding, have a look at his work. He uses Canon with sigma.

That's my thought for today.

As for the osperey shooting out of the window, a good effort, not the thing to do with a 500mm unless you are at least 1/1000 or more hand held. If you shoot Hawkers/dragonflies, that lens is incredible, have a look at Paul's work.
I always use the monopod and never go out without it, with my small 70-200mm I've formed the habit, it was awkward at first, now, it's as if I don't use it, it's become one with the cam.

I'm looking to add a 1.4x for the 70-200mm vr
