back up equipment

This shows the problems when one hasnot proper back up gear.
I'm typing this in  the middle of the night, it is 2.30 over here, as I will be leaving soon to cover a wedding in Germany.
Yesterday evening I prepared my gear for the job. Fresh batteries, empty cards etc,, but there suddenly showed a problem. My 2 Gb cards showed only 56 instead of 79 Gb, whatever I did. As I needed my rest badly, I still went to bed, puzzling what could be the cause.

When I got up, one 2Gb card worked well in My S3 although the other gave problems in both cameras. I 'm so lucky, I still do have my D80 as a back up camera! So, unfortunately, my Fuji S3 has to do the job, my S2 stays home (with the 2Gb card) and the D80 is used as a stand by camera. I wouldnot have to think of leaving for a job a few hundred miles from home without some spare  equipment!

If someone might know a solution to this problem, it will make me quite happy when I return.

I'm not sure I understand what your problem is.
I've had a cards flake and I repair them by doing three things

1. format the card in the computer like it was a disk drive
2. format the card in the camera.
3. take a felt tip pen and mark the card TEST SHOTS ONLY.

thay are too cheap to risk important shots on a "fixed" card.

recovering photos off cards is done with software downloaded from the card manufacturers website.

Is it the camera?  Are other cards not working in that camera?  I don't have a solution either way, I was just wondering what you had tried.
