backup

Pages [1] 2
Well my hard drive went out on my main computer.  I am on the laptop right now installing Photoshop and thanking my lucky stars we are so careful about backing everything up on external drives!  I only lost 6 edited engagement pictures from this weekend.  I have all the originals.  I am not happy about having to re-edit these pictures (especially on a laptop while my husband fixes the other computer) plus finish the rest of the session, but it could have been so much worse.
The moral of the story - BACKUP EVERYTHING OFTEN.  We are glad we did.

Sounds like a good time for everybody to share how they backup.

First thing I do when I get back is dump the cards to 2 sets of CDs or DVDs depending on how many images there are.  One goes in the client file and one goes in a spindle.

Files are then moved to an internal hard drive that only has photography stuff on it. I go through and tag, sort, rename, and delete the junk from there.

And every night I have a script setup that syncs that drive to an external drive and connects to a computer at a relatives house a couple hundred miles away and syncs to that as well.

I've had to go back to DVD a couple times when I deleted the wrong file.  Fortunately I've never had to go to either the external or remote backups.

I keep one set of backup CDs here at work and the other set at home. That way, if there's a fire, I still have a set. Smiley

When I get done shooting we upload the cards to the main computer.  Nothing gets deleted from the cards until everything is backed up.  Then all the images go into a file named "originals" that get saved onto an external hard drive in a folder with the client's name and date.  Once everything is edited I save a file on the external drive named "edited".  I then save just the edited in a remote storage.
That's it.

Susie,

What kind of remote storage do you use?

Hey, thanks for bringing this to my attention.  I do back up, but not as often as I should.  I back up my files from my hard drive to my external every week or two, and I do a (2) CD backup every couple of months.  I guess I should modify my workflow to include immediate backups.  It makes sense and would certainly be a good habit to develop.  Besides, I could save space on my internal drive.

So, my new workflow I think will be something like this:
Save files from cards to folders on internal
Copy files to external
Edit and Save As (with new name) in new folder on external
Burn entire job to CD's (one in my studio, one off-site)

What d'ya think?  Am I missing anything?

I used to backup to a twin set of CDs, one of which was kept offsite, but changed to having another computer offsite when I realized I wasn't backing up like I should.  The CDs were just taking too much time and really couldn't be automated.  It's probably not an option for everybody, but if you have broadband and a relative in another city with broadband it may be something to look in to.  It wasn't easy to setup, but now that it's done I don't have to do anything.

I download on computer #r 1, then transfer to a removable harddrive.  I take that harddrive to computer #2 where I copy those files unto the harddrive of my editing computer.
I edit the photos, and then burn all the files to another removable harddrive, then burn the files to DVD discs.

Once the files are burned to DVD, I delete them from both computers, and one of the removable drives, leaving me with the files on one removable drive and DVD backup.

Once the "finals" removable drive is filled, It is put into storage, and I bring out a new one.  (All my removable drives are 500 gig).

Susie,

What kind of remote storage do you use?

An external drive at someone else's house.  Like I said, I only save the edited versions here.  I don't have room for all the originals.  I also don't store anything remote if the client has bought the digital files on cd.  I figure they should be backing them up and then I have one copy in my storage, that's enough.  The exception is that I save all my stellar images from the shoot that I may want to use in advertising or on my website.  I don't want to lose those.  Wink

grrrrr....
Apparently my motherboard is fried!  It will cost a lot to fix.  I can't afford that or a new computer!  In the winter without weddings I am poor!  I guess I will be working off my laptop for a little while.

I am having a bad day and want to quit photography entirely.  The business part is hard (which I was prepared for, I thought) and I am tired....

yick... hopefully I will feel better tomorrow and regret posting this, lol.
