Hi Robert, Great work as usual!

This is not a critique but a question, on page 14, if photo on the bottom would allow, would you ever think about making the black boarder of the photo above some percent transparent?  What brought that thought to mind was that I like trees and if the black was transparent then you could get a sense of the hight and depth of them from the photo above.  Maybe a 3-d effect with the photo above or something.  Just a thought.

BTW thanks for that nice cool Canadian air!  I was afraid that it was going straight into summer down here!   Grin

The possibilities are endless when it comes to page design.  This wedding book has large pages and page 14 looks right in the context of the book. I never overanalize how something should go together when it comes to design. Like my photography I "just do it". I start working on putting the images into the pages, work from one end of the book to the other,  and it just seems to work. I am not about things bring "right" or perfection - - - just about what feels good and is visually pleasing. I print out the pages as I design them - so I know exactly how they will look as the process goes along.

I know that there are many who do not agree with my approach of "no client input" in the wedding book design process - - - but I can tell you factually that not one client has ever complained about what I have provided or asked for something to be changed. The typical response is the same as it was with the Vermont bride whose album this thread is about. I received this email from her a few weeks  back:

Hi Robert,

I just wanted to thank you soooo much for our photos.  I have been wanting to email and tell you how
beautiful I think it all turned out.  I love our album and have several of the photos framed and hung
already.  I have been able to show a few good friends the album and they have said it is the nicest wedding
album they have ever seen.   I just wanted to pass that along and thank you again!

take care,

I truly believe that the clients who seek me out and hire me, know that I do things differently - that is what appeals to them and they implicitely trust my artistic vision and the images and products that I will provide them. I also think that most of the worries photographers have related to keeping the client happy by either giving them everything they demand or allowing them to control all of the processes involved, are in many cases unfounded fears that will not result in loss of a client if they really respect your work and want you to be the one providing the images of their special day.

Rob,

I forget . . . does the client select the images and you do the album or do you also select the images?  I do my layouts from the bride's selection of image, but do not offer to do changes.  I have never had a complaint about layout either.

That's what I thought that I remembered.  I know that many photographers allow the client to make a few changes to the final layout and then charge them for anything additional.  I don't see the point in doing that either.  As I said, I have never recieved a complaint from a client related to layout.  If a client did have a serious issue, I would happily make the corrections at my expense.

Thanks again,

Hello Robert,

my wedding book dedign is quite different than yours. Maybe I will post one of my books here as well.
I want every book to look different qua style. Not just the design they can get at other photographers.
I use also the thin lines in one color and use full pictures as background.
Or a white background with a small strip of the dressing gown or flowers on it.

The basis for my book is always a square of 30 x 30 cm or fullsize printed pages of 36x36 cm

if you are looking for another album design package:

AlbumDS of spanish origin - http://www.albumds.com/

I am still testing it but results are good.

By the way, how many do you spend on making the design of your book. For me it is mostly 8-12 including the generating of the TIFF files for the montages. For selecting photos I use JPEG proofs generated directly from the RAW-files.
