Dark church, two shooters, one tripod, and no flash

Sometimes you've just got to improvise.

This is the setup my wife used at a wedding last summer.  We were in a fairly dark church.  I was in the back with a 70-200 on our tripod so she got stuck off to one side up front with her camera on a light stand with an umbrella bracket playing the part of the head.

We went out the following Monday morning and bought a second tripod Cheesy Grin

Necessity is the mother of invention.
Now if your ever short a light stand you know how to use a tripod in a pinch.

My first "light stands" were $20 plastic tripods from Walmart.  They were cheap and light, but didn't get nearly tall enough.  Still have a couple of 'em though.  They work pretty well for background lights.

Walmart tripods are my friend.  There is a place we shoot often with a steep hill and a river, I have watched as a tripod rolled down the hill into the water, I have forgotten tripods and left them in parks, churches and reception centers.  I ran over one with a car.  I am NOT spending more on a tripod until I can prove to myself I can keep one longer than 6 months!

I ruined my first tripod from Wal-Mart when I got lost and had to spend the night on the mountain.  While attempting to find my way out in the dark, I got one of the legs caught in some very thick brush (I was 4' off the ground walking in/on it) and it just broke the poor little weak aluminum leg apart.  Snapped it in two, literally.  I went out and bought a Bogen the following week and have used it since, going on 4 years now.  I'll probably not go back to the cheap ones.

The difference between a Bogen and a Walmart tripod is sorta like the difference between you and me Travis.  You are a freakin' mountain man, I think Motel 6 is serious camping!  If I had to spend the night on a mountain I would have to find a sharp object and put myself out of misery!

A broken tripod leg might work Tongue

My wifes idea of roughing it and mine are completely different too. I have gotten her to stay in a tent before. But I had to get this huge tent, air mattress, and enough light to land aircraft.
I'm usually good with a couple wool blankets, a big cup, a good knife, and a change of socks unless it's super cold outside.

To me "roughing it" is parking the motor home on a hill.

Good idea about the tripods, My Bogen is almost never used but I am always sitting down so a monopod works well.
