Necessities in your bag

OK we go to a location to shoot.
What NON photo stuff do you carry?
Depends on the shoot of course what we take so say what and why, I'll start.

portrait session on location
---------------------------------------
1. Portable steamer (walmart sells three, its the middle one <$40) for wrinkles on backdrops and clothing.
2. Those sticky tape roller lint things are very usefull when you have a dark background
3. those little clamps that sell by the bag full in the home stores. I use to hold the backdrop, clip a towel over a window, even make a bikini top fit better.

Tide Pen for when the groom drops a piece of pepperoni on his shirt.

Needle and white and black thread for the groomsman that didn't check his shirt at the store and finds that the sleeve is split from cuff to elbow.

And like Bob said, a lint roller. I got one from Walmart where they keep all the travel sized stuff so it's pretty small.

I may have to go and get the portable steamer.  We've been talking about getting one for about a year now.

vaseline in a squeeze tube for lips

oil blotting sheets (Mary Kay has the best on the market) for the face

Asprin (in case I give someone a headache)

Safety pins for the bridesmaid that didn't get a proper bra for the strapless gown (this is my most common problem)

A protein bar and a bottled water for long events

clear nail polish for panty hose runs

travel size hairspray for flyaways

pen (to sign the marriage certificate or contracts, whatever)

white plastic garbage bags for tall kitchen garbage pails (rip them at the seams and they are a drop cloth to keep clothing or the bride's dress clean)

umbrella (I can't find a white one that's cheap, mine is black)

facial tissue

mints (not gum)

nail clippers (for broken nails or to clip threads on clothing that shouldn't be there)

Wow, Susie must take her purse!  Just kidding.

I take along a crescent wrench, pliers, my Leatherman Wave  Cheesy Grin, a roll of duct tape, and a 2 1/4 lb sledge (in case they give me headaches!).

Oh, and I bring along my Digital Photography for Dummies book just in case I have time to do a little light reading!

The odd thing is that I don't carry a purse anywhere unless absolutely necessary.
Did my post make me sound like an old lady?
Actually my preparedness started early on.  I was shooting a wedding and saved the day with a saftey pin.  Pretty soon all the bridesmaids were having me help them pin their bras and I they all went on and on about how great I was to be prepared and how someday they were going to have me shoot their weddings....
It's cheesy, I know, but getting business from a saftey pin is the cheapest marketing I have ever done.

The problem is no matter how much extra stuff you carry with you they will always need something you don't have.  Sometimes just knowing where to get something is good enough.  The split sleeve mention above actually happened, but I didn't have a needle and thread with me at the time.  I suggested they call downstairs because the front desk probably had what they needed or at least could point them in the right direction.  5 minutes later a guy from the front desk was at the door with a needle and white thread and I still got bonus points from the client and groomsmen.

I do have a little sewing kit in my wedding bag now though.

Sometimes you just have to use what you have in a McGyver (did I spell that right?) fashion.

I carry lots and lots of plastic bags. White, black, clear... It rains 80% of the time here in Washington state, so those come in handy for covering gear, placing under someone's butt, using as a diffuser or as a reflector.

I also have a walking cane because I always go farther than I should have and can't get back to the car without one. Tongue

My car has a full survival pack, complete with sewing kit, waterproof matches, etc., so I don't have to pack that stuff.

Also rubber bands and clamps are usually in my bag.

I just ordered a new camera case, so I can't wait to see what all I can shove in there. My backpack is now too small for all the gear I've collected and want to bring.

I also have a tripod that fits on my car window. Grin Oops...but that's a camera-related thing, isn't it?

This is starting to be a really great thread!!!
and I thank you guys for some really good things to bring.

You reminded me of things I carry that I forgot like pen light, lighter, co2 tire pump and tire patch kit (wheelchair, remember?)

I drive a mini van, so I've tons of stuff first aid, tools, jumper cables, etc.

Hey Anton, what do you carry when you go shooting? You're so far from Tennessee are the things you carry different?

as a side comment, I was at a shoot where the model put on a costume and she didn't "fill it up" enough. It just looked bad. I told her so and she asked if I had any duct tape, I did and she stood behind my backdrop for a bit and when she came out looked great. I have no idea what she did with that tape but I carry some with me to every shoot. (When it was time to change, I asked her if it was going to hurt, she said "not much" [shrug])

Ouch!
I would have gone the kleenex route, lol, probably not as effective though.

Bob, you should keep chicken cutlets handy for that kind of thing. No, not the fowl variety, lol, but the silicone breast enhancers that look like chicken cutlets. Smiley

Not sure I could say "You need to look in my *enhancements* bag and pick out a couple of good ones". What I said to her was "I don't think that costume fits you" she wanted to wear it, there were a dozen other costumes to choose from.
