LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT!

Pages [1] 2
Are you going to try to photograph it? Here's a nice little guide:
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2007/08/digital-lunar-e.html

Hopefully, the clouds will be gone by then! It's not supposed to be great for those of us on the west coast, but for all of you further east, you should have a great show! It will begin around 7pm MST and reach its peak around 8:30pm.

Good luck! Smiley

Ah, I will miss it.  I live in a city surrounded by mountains and so we get this thing called an inversion.  It's where we don't see the sun for weeks.  No stars or moon either.

Yikes, that's horrible. I love the view of the stars from here, but it's frequently cloudy/rainy. I'm hoping tonight isn't one of those nights. I'd love to take my spotting scope/digicam out!

Fun, you will have to share your images with us.  msn.com has an article on their front page about the eclipse and what it will look like in your area.

And yes, I go crazy this time of the year without the sky being visible.  It affects a lot of people.  Doctors sometimes prescribe this UV light thing you can put in your office, it simulates sunlight and tricks your mind.  It's called Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder.  I don't get it bad enough to do anything.

Its 8:45 Eastern, I'm sitting in my driveway. The sky has patchy clouds my 1200mm lens is on the tripod and I'm sitting here waiting for the big show...

Unfortunately it was a little cloudy down here in Costa Rica - I do not have a tripod - my fastest and longest lens is my Nikkon 18-200VR f5.6.

Nikon D40 - 18-200 @ 200mm - - - - all heavily cropped obviously

Manual Exposure - f8 @ 1/250 second 400ISO

Proof that the "SUNNY 16 RULE" applies to the moon as much as it does the earth:

ISO 200 - - - f16 @ 1/200'th second

What a view from my spot on the sidewalk at 11:00PM tonight (12:00PM eastern time) - I just about fell asleep for the night under the Costa Rican skies:

Here's mine from tonight! I missed it when it was totally eclipsed because it was behind the trees:

That's some serious hunk of lens BOB  (is that 1200mm with or without APS conversion?) - - - but a minimum of what was needed to get in nice and close. Unfortunately for me, I was straddled with a measly 200mm (300mm equivalent) - - - but then again, my moto is to never let shortcomings or inadequacies stop me from doing what I want or got to do - - - and even though it ain't ideal, I've got something to show even though I would have loved to have your 1200mm and a tripod to keep things steady. Thanks for all of the extra shots to support the thread.

Its my spotting scope, a Celestron C5 from ebay several years ago. As a lens its rated at 1250 f11 so I guess thats without the APS conversion. [grin]
A new one looks like this

Unfortunately I do not have any software with me for layering composites, so FTP'd a selection of my files from last night to my 3D animation buddy in Canada so that he could arrange them into a sequence. This was his result:

Here is the full size version of what he made up:

very cool, Robert!!

Do you know what causes that white ring around the moon?

This is one of those rare occasions where we can all take photos of the same thing and discuss it even though we are hundreds of miles apart.

I think Marian is the "sky watcher". Marian, anything else we can all shoot at please let us know.
