Engagement at Hermann Park

I guess if I'm going to set this board up I should be willing to throw one of my shots in to be critiqued.

A quick note,

A natural setting and mood. More of a portraiture style would be nice. Move closer. Wink
The white fountain in the background is distracting the eye, it's competing for our attention.

Well done on the effort.

Critiquing the bosses images?  I must be nuts!  Grin

Overall exposure looks good.  The horizontal crop accentuates the straightness of her leg and really does nothing to strengthen the image.  I would try a vertical crop.  Way too many hands and the hands have too much tension in them.  The hands should flow not look like the couple is holding on for dear life.  Her expression is one of ahhh, safe once again in the arms of my lover.  Whereas his expression says I'm glad the Packers beat the Jets last night.  Cheesy

I would have stepped over about six feet to camera right so their shoulders would not be at such an extreme angle to the camera.

You may try a square crop on this to cut out the legs and fountain.  Her expression is great.  I think the background was just challenging.

Nah.  I'm here to get better too.

I didn't want to put this in the original post, but this shot was almost totally accidental.  Normally I start a session with a few shots where I'm not really trying to get the shot, but just trying to get the clients used to having their picture taken.  This is one of those shots.  Turns out it's one of my (and their) favorites from the session.

The fountain was intentional.  It's a pretty well known landmark in Houston and I tried to get it in the shot.  Had I been six feet to the right there would have been traffic in the background instead.

edit:  After I wrote that it seems like I'm making excuses.  I'm really not intending to and I really appreciate what was said.

Well known landmark? Then take em' over and shoot them there. :=)

While I agree with Mike's comment to "take them over there and shoot them", you could also have shot from a higher angle and gotten some separation between the iron fence and the fountain.

The three legs and then all of the arms and hands make it difficult to figure out where to crop this from the bottom.  I don't like his legs, even without hers.  He just looks like his position is too uncomfortable and his right arm is just reaching too far.

Perhaps raising her knee and having her turn her body into his more or having her sit between his legs . . . I have to admit that I am really not sure about correcting this pose.

Hi Ryan,
I agree about the legs.  It gets a little confusing in the bottom portion of the photo.
I don't mind the fountain, but I agree that the eye gravatates that way.
But what I think you totally nailed, was the expression.  You can't "pose" that.  To me, that's one of the things about this photo that takes priority over fountains and legs.
