External hard drives, good ones, bad ones?

Looking to pick up a small portable hard drive. Anybody have one they're really happy with, or really unhappy with?

A terabyte would be nice, but I probably don't really need that much. Up until this year I've been using a 16gb flash drive which has been more than enough. But I'm teaching a new class on 3d animation and the file sizes that I want to be able to carry around has gone up a lot.

unless you have the hardware, USB3 uses a different cable to connect to the drive than USB2 which means I have 50 usb cables and 1 cable that fits my jump drive. Its a good one, though (seagate).

I usually buy western digitals.

One thing you might consider is a USB thumb drive that holds a SD card. You can get a 64gig sd card if you need. I keep my web development stuff (moes) on an 8 gig and I can just pop the sd card into my laptop and not have to worry about breaking off the USB thing sticking out.

I have a 1.5T Seagate that I use as a back-up. It's worked well for over a year now on XP and WIN7. Just USB 2 though.

Think the speed issue may be computer related, not the drive. They "upgraded" software at work and anything USB seems to have issues. Students have to plug their jump drives in, let drivers load which sometimes takes up to 4 or 5 minutes, remove the jump drive, and then put it back in to be able to use it.

Sounds like a real PITA.
