Flash diffuser from a film canister

Ok, so it's a little dorky and not something you'd want to pull out on assignment.  But if you're in need of a flash diffuser for your pop-up flash Photojojo has the plans for making one out of an old transparent film canister.

If you've never been to Photojojo.com it's a great place to kill a few hours looking at photography project ideas.

Hey is it that much worse than my technique of rubberbanding a tissue to the thing?
Granted, it won't work on my external flash heads, but I think it looks fine, and honestly, besides us photograhpers who is going to recognize what it is?  Well, maybe people that are older than their twenties because they didn't have digital most of their lives....
Anyway, cool find.

Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.

I've shot with a plastic cup taped to my flash head before I bought that stoffen thing.

My friend at the camera shop sells a ton of these things

Cutting the bottom off of a rubbing alcohol bottle and shoving it onto the top of a shoe flash is also supposed to work pretty well.

Ok, that one might look silly.

I have heard of using those gallon milk container things (do they have a name?  The dairy delivers my milk in bottles so I don't know).  I think that would look hilarious, but you would probably get a fairly large light source.

Stoffen makes a good diffuser for shoe mount flashes. Its so popular that Nikon includes one when you buy an SB800.

Gary Fong sells one thats hands down better. Nobody uses Gary's because it looks silly.

Mike or I would never shoot a new model with a milk jug taped to our flash but would do it in an instant if it gave better light and the model already knew how strange we were .... er I meant how good we are..... [grin]

lol, shooting a model in a studio is one thing, you only have one person to explain your weird homemade things with.  Travis made a cardboard snoot that actually looks pretty nice, but can you imagine shooting a wedding with a milk jug protruding from your camera???  From the back it would look like you had a gallon of milk perched on your head.

Bob, maybe you using a milk jug.    Big Grin

Hey, ever tried the Gary Fong Lightsphere? I did when I had the Canon outfit, I must say, it worked pretty good.

I did apply a bubble wrap around the flash, that worked well also.

Gary Fong is a marketing genius, everyone that has ever considered photography has heard of the lightsphere.  I watched a little video about it, considered it, then never bothered to order it....  Everyone that has one seems to like it, that's good news.

That's the thing, it works well, everyone who has used it likes it, but they don't use it because it looks silly..

I ate my cornflakes out of it first before using it.   Big Grin
