Fly ball

Pages [1] 2
Hello everyone,

I posted a long time ago and then bought a new computer and lost the link.  I have finally found you guys again so thought that I would post!

I went to Montreal this past week-end and photographed the first ever NAFA sanctioned fly ball tournament in Region 20, which has just been newly formed.  The tournament was held at the Olympic Stadium at the big animal show (SNAC).  I don't know what SNAC stands for but I do know that it's in French.

The crowds were incredible and the dogs were in good form.  It was definitely a crowd pleaser.  I was able to practice panning and got some great shots...

Chase is a red merle Australian Shepherd with a tail...

Mozart is a Jack Russell Terrier...

And Circus is always fun to watch!

Great Shots, and welcome back!!
Down here those are usually done with bigger dogs, but its also warm enough to let the dog live in the yard.. [grin]

Thanks Bob!

You use larger dogs for fly ball?  Medium size dogs seem to be the norm around here as the larger dogs are usually slower.  The small dogs are the height dog and determine the height of the jumps for the relay race.

You can read more about fly ball at the following link if you're interested.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Great action shots, nicely done.

Some space in front of #1 needed
My only issue though, a color correction is needed.

Thanks Mike,

Can you please explain about the colour correction?  Did you mean on one image or on all three?  On my monitor (which is calibrated), the colouring of the dogs is accurate so I'm a little confused as to what you mean.

I cannot do a workshop on one of your images, O well.
I'm talking about your white balance, it's green, in levels you can correct it.

They don't look green to me, although I'm on my notebook right now and it's not calibrated.

Green?  I'll try printing one and see what I get.  I shot Raw with Auto white balance but switched them to Flourescent in CS3 Camera Raw so they shouldn't be green.

Mozart, the middle dog has a yellow squishy ball and the other two have regular tennis balls.

I can't believe we're discussing the color of dogs balls..

[shrug] *laughs outloud*

the middle dog's ball is yellow a little darker than the flags in the background. the other two are really light lime green (the color I would expect them to be)
definate contrast in the third photo between the lime green ball and the yellow on the side on the thing he's jumping through.

I taught my dog to fetch the ball when he was a puppy. the third time I threw it he looked at me like "You keep throwing the damn ball you go get it your self" then he laid down next to me. He's my best friend but he has decided if I want something I shouldn't throw it away. (now he's my 13 year old cairn terrier and is way smarter than I would have ever expected.)

Already Folks, My 24 imac is not calibrated to american standards, it's canadian eh?
Plus I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to color correcting an image.

O, I never shoot AW, I guess I better start doing so, there's a big reason why AW is the best white balance in a camera.

So sorry I'm blind, man!!! I should put my glasses on, O, wait, No, wait, I still see a green color cast. Gosh darn it.

You shot raw? What is "K" temp for arena lights, certainly not Fluorescent. wink wink wink.

Play with it, I did, I have a beauty of the Jack, but, I cannot post it, the site won't allow it.

I'll mail you the workshop, cheers my friends.

I wrote the letter in fun, don't take offense eh?

While I'm not taking offence, showing me a work up without telling me what you've done and being sarcastic aren't exactly helping me.

according to the google gods ...

Light sources. Metal halide (M-H) has become the lamp source of choice for arena event lighting systems. This lamp source is significantly more efficient than incandescent sources and renders colors more effectively than high pressure sodium (HPS) sources. M-H lamps have a flicker factor of less than 0.1, reducing the undesirable stroboscopic effect, which is particularly noticeable during slow motion replay television broadcast.

M-H lamps are available in color temperature ratings from 3200K to 5600K, and with color rendering indexes as high as 70. M-H lamps may be operated with instant-restrike type systems; however, evidence of superior field experience and a minimum five year warranty is recommended in considering the use of this type of control.

that said your white balance needs to be set to flash. (little warm, but that's what I like)

Color Temperature Light Source
1000-2000 K  Candlelight
2500-3500 K  Tungsten Bulb (household variety)
3000-4000 K  Sunrise/Sunset (clear sky)
4000-5000 K  Fluorescent Lamps
5000-5500 K  Electronic Flash
5000-6500 K  Daylight with Clear Sky (sun overhead)
6500-8000 K  Moderately Overcast Sky
9000-10000 K  Shade or Heavily Overcast Sky

this is a pretty good explanation that doesn't get too geeky.

I am seeing a very slight green color cast on the first image, but maybe I am only seeing it because it was suggested by someone else.  Of course it could be the monitor I am on.  It is calibrated to a local lab.  Travis is always saying my images are red.... I may just not have an eye for it.... which I guess I should work on.

I also never bother with my white balance in camera and just fix it later in Photoshop.  That, at least works for me.

I am noticing a little noise in the second image.  It is hard to tell if it will effect the final print, I might try and clean that up a bit in Photoshop.  I have had a lot of luck with the noise reduction tool.  The technical information didn't show up.  I am interested in what ISO you were shooting at.

Great captures, none the less.  The third is my favourite.  It is a good clean shot at the right time and the dog is adorable, which doesn't hurt.  And Natalie, ignore the sarcasm, dirty humor and egos.  The group used to be better and lot more helpful, but lately it has degraded.  I am sorry.
