Freezing Problem

Pages [1] 2
I am not really expecting anyone to know what is wrong or be able to help me.  It is probably a hardware problem.  I don't know.  However, I am really frustrated.  Everyone once in awhile after spending a long time editing an image my Photoshop program freezes right when I go to File and Save As.  As soon as I select the save option nothing happens.  It just freezes forever.  If I look at the Task Manager it says that Photoshop is not responding.  I have tried just leaving it sitting forever and seeing if it comes back, it doesn't.  For some reason this happens on images I have spent a long time on.  I don't know if that is the reason or if it's just like how the buttered side of the bread always lands on the floor when dropped (you know, karma).
If anyone has any ideas let me know, if not, oh well, I will just keep re-eding images over and over again.

Have you installed anything new recently?  Any changes in your computer?  I would probably try reinstalling Photoshop first, although that doesn't always help.

If nothing else, you probably want to start saving every few minutes so that if it does lock up you at least only have to redo a few minutes of work instead of the whole image.

Task manager click on performance and see what your processor is doing, if its close to 100% she ain't locked, she's busy. click on the processes tab and find the process that is using up all of your processor and write it down to google later. then try to kill it.

if your photoshop scratch disk is the same physical drive as your destination it can really bog down saving a big image.

I will reinstall.  I don't think I changed anything right before this started happening, it's been doing it for a month or two now.

Bob, I checked "performance" in the task manager, it says 0%, it's stuck.  The first few times it happened I didn't close the program, I just walked away from the computer to see if it would unlock, no luck, even after letting it sit all night once.

It's not a huge problem.  I was just frustrated last night because I spent a good 30 minutes on an image only to have it lock up.  I will start saving often on big projects I guess.

Eventually I want to get CS3, so maybe this is good motivation to spring for it sooner than later.

I stopped using PhotoShop's Bridge because it was always freezing my computer. I don't have enough RAM on my computer, so freezings are quite common for me, even when not using Bridge. How much RAM do you have? Before buying CS3, make sure your computer isn't the culprit. Smiley

Comments and Harsh Critiques gladly accepted. My photos are ok to edit.

I'm thinking the same thing.  If you're having a problem with a program, trying a version that's going to take even more space, RAM, and processor probably won't fix the issue.

No, I don't think the RAM is the problem.  I should have plenty, it's a newer computer.  The thing is that the same program doesn't do that on my laptop that has less RAM and a much cheaper processor (a Celeron).
It's got to be the computer, somehow since I don't experience the problem with the same program from the same disk with the same settings on the laptop.
I just have no idea.  Perhaps there is some little glitch that re-installing will help.

It's a P.C. thang, never on a mac.   Big Grin

Make sure you have no programs running in the background
Check your scratch disc in preferences.

Ha! My nuclear med camera is hooked up to a mac and it freezes in the middle of blood flow studies sometimes.

Susie, did you reinstall yet? Smiley

No I am too lazy.  I am also too lazy to get in on the P.C. vs. Mac debate, actually on that one I just don't care.  It's like how it doesn't matter if you drive a Ford or a Chevy (I drive a Dodge).

I was just kidding around, easy now.

Did you check your scratch disc, make sure Photoshop is designated to it's own scratch disc.?

Is the computer new?
I had a similar incident with the p.c., I checked the mother board, there are some components that look like AA batteries, anyhow, I could see some were not normal looking, I hope it's not the board. If those go, pooched board. Sometimes motherboards can be defective.

Susie, are you running Norton Internet Security? It could be the problem if you are.

Are you running any virus/spyware/firewall software that you are NOT running on the PC that works?

I don't know.

Mike, my computer is not new however just recently my computer stopped working and one computer guy thought it was the motherboard, but another guy we took it to said it was the power supply, replaced the part for $100 and it works just fine.  So maybe there still is a problem with the motherboard, the freezing has been happening for awhile, but perhaps the motherboard has been "sick" for awhile too.

Good thing I back everything up.  Oh and I did check the scratch disk, I think it's set up right.

You can easily see the motherboard, open the box, look for the Battery looking things, if they appear brownish on the end, "Pooched"

What are you calling a battery looking thing?  caps? if a cap is brown its past dead.

Susie, if you "don't know" what software is running on your pc, someone needs to look.

I'm not set up here but PM me a phone number Monday and I'll climb into your pc and look around. (when I get you on the phone)
