Glamour Editing

Pages [1] 2
Ok, so I was on another photo board that I read once in awhile.  And I came across a post about editing in a glamour/animated sorta style.  I am not sure what the name of this style is or if it has one.  The artist/photographer that was being copied is Robert Alvarado.  Basically most of the posters were saying that it's lighting and makeup or special plug-ins you use to get the effect.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I tried playing with the image from the forum.  With permission from the owner, Perry Fletcher, and I am posting it here (again with permission).  I just used Elements to edit it.  Let me know what you guys think.

Here is one of my own images.  Before and After.  Yeah, Yeah, I know, I underexposed the original.  Also, the edit is really over the top and not what I do for normal clients.

Hm, looking back over Robert's stuff mine is totally different.  Of course we all have our own style and way of doing things.  I personally try never to "copy" someone, but it's fun to use their work as inspiration.   Anyway... just wanted to say all that.

I actually like it, and can see it being used for pinup style photos! How much time in involved?

Comments and Harsh Critiques gladly accepted. My photos are ok to edit.

I think that the first set is great.

The second set looks oversharpened, and it looks like you didn't smooth the whole face. The jaw line doesn't match the edit on the rest of the face.

Sarcasm, frustrating the clueless since 3000 b.c.

Robert's process took a year of progress to achieve what he was after.
He uses props and a white background.

Your process is a work in progress. I would have kept the background like the original.
Your model does appear to have that animated look, so keep practicing, it's coming along.

I know you're not going for Robert's look etc.

The first set, nice work.

Here's my 4-5min version. Uncalibrated monitor here so I hope the color is good.

jkleb: Yeah, my second set is rough.  And I think I did oversharpen the resized version.
Your edit looks good too, but I think definition needs to be added, shading or something.  When smoothing skin sometimes everthing gets flattened... like she looks puffy.

Mike:  Yeah I read the thing about him taking a year to develop his process, yadda yadda, it's taken me 10 years to come up with the "look" I do (that's how long I have been using photo editing software) Smiley  I think for everyone editing is a work in process, over time your style will change, client's wants will change, trends will change, editing software will change, you will learn new ways to do things.

Marian:  First edit took me ten minutes, the second edit tooke me two minutes, but I worked off the edit I had already done earlier and then just grabbed the original for comparison.  I did the edit for this thread, I won't use it for anything.

It's fun to try new styles and attempt things even if they aren't what you will use.  I would say that I do glamour editing, but for my clientele it obviously has to be more realistic (brides and boudoir), but you learn new things when you play around.

Oh yeah, Mike, obviously high key background, posing, props, outfits, etc... lend to that look.  Also specific glamour lighting is important too.

I too love his work, He has threatened to release a DVD but I bet he never does.

How do you do that?

play in photoshop, search the internet, view work like this, and try, try, try and keep working on it till you have what you like and show the world, if it gets good marks on average, go for it.

Do what exactly?  I can answer what I do for specific things and guess what others do for their editing, but I could always be wrong.
