f/9 seems pretty closed down for that   How close were you? 

It's a much better demo image than the row of mailboxes or coke cans that are in pretty much every photography book I've opened.

bright sun, Nikkor 18-200VR I was about 2 feet from the "focus" area and inches above the cable on the close end. The far end is about eight feet away
