Google's 10th Birthday

Google turned 10 years old a few days ago.  In an age when web sites go from popular to obsolete in a few weeks it's odd to think of a site that's been around that long.

Here's a screen shot of the first Google home page when it was still hosted at Stanford and Brin and Page were PhD students.

I remember I used to use Alta Vista all the time and my told me to try this new search site when I was over at his house one day. Little did I know that everything else would soon be left in the dust.

OK, so I use Google all the time, because they are the only one that exists, right?  J/K.  Really though, why did they rise to the top and leave everyone else in the dust?  I just don't get what they do that's so different.  Please don't laugh at me for not knowing.

I asked a friend the same question and he said he thinks it's because they decided to do one thing and do it well - searches.  Most other search engines seemed to want to be a portal or home page, they tried to cram in news and human interest stories and lots of ads on the front page.
At least he said that's why he liked Google originally, he didn't have to wait for other stuff to load, he just pulled it up and typed what he wanted in the big box in the center.
I guess that makes sense, although I am not sure it's the reason, just hypothosis from a friend who is smarter than myself.

I think that's probably part of the reason. Google's home page started out very simple and search is all they did and what they focused on.  Of course they've branched out into advertising and make a stupid amount of money from that now.

They also have really good search results compared to other engines.  The other search engines have had to play catch-up.

Which unfortunately means on Yahoo's search engine my website comes up as the third result and on Google I can't find myself on the first several pages Sad
