Hands and Wedding Ring PosesLibrary Thread

Pages [1] 2 3
Alright, I know there aren't a ton of wedding photographers on here, but I need some help from those of you who have shot a wedding or two Smiley

Hand posing with the rings!  I fear that sometimes I don't do so hot with this picture... Sometimes I nail it, I don't know what that is dependant on... the weather, the phase the moon is in, the people I am working with, or what (I am putting my money on the moon thing).

Will someone please post a shot or two that are good examples of this shot?  You know the one where the hands are in the picture with the rings on, showing well.  I really want to discuss this.

grrr, you guys are useless Smiley Just kidding.

I am going to post some and please please please give me critique.  I know this is a weak area of mine.  Perhaps because I think it's a cheesy shot, but it's necessary.  I have others that aren't so traditional, like where the bride and groom are just holding up their hands and making cute faces and where the bride is just holding them both, and where the rings aren't on their hands.  I can nail those, it's these traditional ones that are weird for me.

Anyway I am going to post a bunch and I will put the bride's name so you can refer to them that way.

I know the lighting is horrible, it was in the darkest reception center ever and I was bouncing an on camera flash, not my best, but hopefully someone can help me with the pose.

The first one doesn't show his ring, I know.

see, I never do them the same, and it's always difficult because I am usually trying to cover the groom's nails (at his request), and a lot of girls just can't do a graceful hand pose, I end up trying to arrange their fingers one by one... and it's still bad.  Help!

I actually like the lighting in this one.  It's warm and adds to the curves.  Some of the other ones have more even lighting which gives them less depth, IMHO.

As for getting them all the same.  I don't even worry with it.  In fact I try to switch things up and do it different at most weddings.  So I don't know if I would fret over this one if I were you.

But if you are determined to get them all the same then you have to be in a place where you control 100% of the lighting, which at weddings is hard to do.  Don't let this get you down though!  They're great shots! (and how many brides are going to be comparing them anyway?)

Thanks Geno
I guess the issue isn't that I am trying to get them the same, I don't really care about that.  It's just that I struggle with posing every time.  I wish I had a set way to do it to make it easier for me.
I guess I should get on other's websites and study how they do it and then memorize a good hand position and then practice it.

Oh and the lighting on that dark one with flash - it looks fine thanks to Photoshop Smiley

I know it can be really awkward.  One thing I make sure the bride and groom are both facing the same way usually the groom snuggled right behind the bride, so their left hands are more accessible and won't be at awkward wrist angles.  But also feel free to move away from the bouquet.  Having the groom's hand on the bride's waist with the bride laying over his is a nice pose.  I've also done it where it's not quite as tight of a shot but the bride's left hand is up on her shoulder and the groom is holding it with his left.  Then you can get their faces looking at the rings.  I'll try and track down some pics later, just on here quick before I get my girlie some lunch. Thanks, I would love to see some examples.
I guess I use the bouquet a lot because it has interesting texture and color, so it's not just hands, maybe I am trying to take focus away from my bad posing, lol.

Not a whole lot of help, but I really like sh054.  Every time I do a ring shot it seems like I have to get both rings in the shot.  That one seems to be more part of a story than just a simple ring shot.

Susie, I am no help because I don't do very well at these at all.  The shots you have here do not have the 'life' and beauty that you capture in all your other images however, so I do think you should pursue this some more.  I don't mean that as rudely as it probably comes across.  Check out patkenphotographer.com.  This is the site of Doug Gordon; a 'big-shot' in New York and in the workshops for photographers.  Anyway, on his Wedding III page he has one in about the middle of the image gallery that I think is nice, also on his Details gallery there is one that is nice.  Just for ideas.  I also wonder if you could study some technique for hand position in formal dancing.  They seem to place hands so elegantly together for men and women.

Mainly I think you need something more interesting.  Maybe the hands are actually doing something, like dancing, the groom kissing the back of her hand (like Doug's image), her hand along his cheeck with his hand running up her arm, his hand on her neck or chest area (no, not actually copping a feel).  All very close cropped of course, so the shot is about the rings and hands, but so they are doing something believable and loving/sensual/together.  I do like the idea of having the bride's back to the groom so the hands are already on the same side.  Also, if done properly, you could very easily move into full-length poses and many other various shots with the same basic pose and setup.  In fact, maybe you should keep your eyes open for where their hands are in other photos you are doing as you pose them for together shots.  There may be ideas already in front of you that you just need to exploit for your ring shots.

Susie, I had to look at #2 for a bit, I thought it was stolen from mine. LOL
I have one very similar, however, it's sepia and I brought back the "Silver" rings.
