It might be cheaper to get light stands and umbrellas and a wireless radio slave... and keep the flash as far from the camera's hot shoe as possible

Sorry, I'm prejudiced against on-camera flash. You'll have to forgive me. In all honesty, I understand the reason for using flash attached to the camera and I even do it... occasionally.
Also, maybe you should consider making a setup with hot-shoe adapters and sync cords instead of the mfr's cords because they are very expensive. Of course, that means you won't have your camera's auto functions to control the flash.... But even something like
THIS RADIO SLAVE could do it and you wouldn't have any wires in the way.
