Help me Spend Money

I'm looking for a really great set of easily movable lights, preferably the on location type (ie no electricity).  We are looking at DynaLight and Lumidine.  Does anyone have experience with either of these systems (we'll be a three light setup).
Is there something better that you can recommend?  We aren't looking for a bargain.  We want the best provided it's $5000 or under. :-)
Thanks in Advance!

Cindy,

I haven't used the portable DynaLights, but I have used their pack system for a number of years and can highly recommend the company.

How are these going to be used?  Are you sure that you need that much power?

The Dyna Lights are excellent for light weight portable use.  I have seen the new battery operated ones in use but have never owned one.  I do have 12 Lumadynes with the power packs. Theses units are definitely workhorses.  The power packs can also be combined with Q-flash lamp heads for automatic operation.  The Q-flash units that work on Quantum Turbo power packs are a good choice as well.

All the units mentioned here have modeling lights in the flash heads either as standard equipment or optional heads with this feature.  Theses modeling lights. when turned on, do suck quite a bit of battery power so I capacity battery packs are a must.  The modeling lamps themselves are not as strong as those found in AC powered studio type units.  The lamps in the portables are fine when shooting with direct flash, however, with umbrellas or soft boxes there is not quite enough light to see what you are doing  especially if the ambient light in the room you are working is high.   On the AC studio units, the modeling lamps are usually 150 to 200 watt quartz lamps which have the capability to punch through light modifiers and enable you to see the exact lighting pattern your are creating. This pertains only to the visibility of the modeling lights on the subject- the flash will come through just fine but if the modeling light is dim, you won;t know exactly where the flash is going.

With all the aforementioned units snoots and special reflectors are available for hair, kicker and background lights.

Hope this helps!   Ed Shapiro

Thank you so much to both Eds!  Ed F., these will be used for wedding formals and bridals.  I've been using slaved 580s on sticks (assistant held) and on tripod, but they just aren't doing well enough for me.  I get shadow issues, especially with the stick flash, as no doubt, my assistant's arm gets tired, and he can't hold it perfectly still.  I've got wizards, but have had firing problems with both that and the slave method.
Because all my shoots are on location, I need something extremely portable.
Ed S, thank you so much for your detailed information.  Hubby is the tech guy of the team, but like guys can be sometimes, he hates to "stop an ask directions".  :-)  He's the one who will make the final decision.

STOP!   Grin  Before you spend a whole bunch of money on new units here's a few comments.  Your 580s on "sticks" do not cause bad shadows all by themselves- they have to be placed correctly.  Whether you are using the most sophisticated lighting gear in the world or a candle. the placement of the light sources will determine the success.  Units with modeling lamps will help you in placing the lights properly in order to get the results you want.

For multiple lighting on candid shots, I do have assistants with lights on a stick- however the stick is a light weight mono-pod and the assistant is trained to place the lights exactly where they are needed.

The Wizards-  Those things are just about the most foolproof units I have ever used and I have been using slaves since 1959.  My wizards have worked over a block away and 3 floors below where I am working.  If your,s are "missing" shots the may need repair, however, I have found that those problems are usually caused by simple problems such as dirty battery contacts or connector cords which are faulty and not making contact.  Clean the contacts with an emery board and tense up the springs a bit.  If the jacks atop the units have become loose this may require repair by the manufacturer.  Try the battery thing first, then wiggle the connector cords a bit and see if there is any erratic or intermittent firing. Theses units are built for long distances and location use.  Also- the problems can be with the flash equipment (the contacts) rather than the Wizards.  When you get new units- the Wizards should work consistently with no problems as long as they are in good working order.

Not asking directions is one of my faults as well but that GPS thing has solved all of that.  Not asking about equipment and researching throughly before making a large investment can cost you a lot of bucks that you may not need to spend- that's bad!

Good luck!     Ed S. Grin

Hi Ed, and thank you again.
The problem in a nutshell, is my very fine assistant tends to sway when holding the stick (mono) flash.  What wasn't a shadow a nano second is a shadow now.  I can't blame him.  He's a fine assistant.  I know his arms just get tired.  So I'm trying to think of something stedfast.  I'm also trying to think ahead.  We've mangled it a few times, trying to "make due" when we could afford gear we could grow with.  And we always lost money when selling the make due for the now needed.  That's why now, I'd rather start at much at the top as I can.
We will be buying a new home soon, so these things could also move inside.
