Howard - Ironically I just posted about this in the Glamour Editing thread.
I think there is a time and place for all different types of editing. Obviously head shots are not a place where you want to do any false advertising.
Everyone also has different styles. I personally do like to play with editing, but playing is for playing, editing for clients is different.
This is a good shot, it does appear natural. I would hire this model. That is a money shot

I do play around with different effects also. I still use the gaussian technique, I'm just very subtle with it.
Here is an image with an affect I modifed and call it "Howard's Soft Pop" action. I usually pull it down quite a bit afterwards since it's heavy handed with softness, contrast and saturation but sometimes I really like the look. It doesn't work with all images but sometimes I apply it and like the results such as here.
This is the same image as above but cropped tight. I don't like the way I posed her left hand here so a tight crop works better.
