Here is some new stuff

http://www.howardholley.com/html/brandy.html

Sorry, I haven't been around much. It's been a while since I've posted here, or anywhere for that matter. Here is some new work and any comments are appreciated.

Things I already know about the images.
First, the left hand is not posed well in the arms crossed poses
Second, I  have too many arms crossed poses.

Thanks,

Hi Howard! It's hard to comment about your work, when it's presented like this without a way to reference them. That said, I do love the one with her sitting on that bench with the mesh back. It's very sexy seeing the shape of her body through that mesh. Smiley

Howard,  I agree with your self critique.  One problem I saw immediately was that she is standing in every image.  Variety is the spice of photography.  Having your subject seated in some poses allows you to add some variety to the session.

For variety when I am shooting, I do the following; head shots, head and shoulders shots, waist up, 3/4 length and full length shots. These are done with the subject standing, seated on something, leaning on something, seated on the floor and laying on the floor.  Lots of times you can pose the subject and then get all five different types of images from that one single pose.

Here is an image cropped to 8 x 10. Out of all of them, this is the money shot, IMO. and the one I will recommend she submit to her agency but will be her choice.
She is new to modeling and I'm new to shooting models, allthough not my first model headshot, I think we did allright.

Thanks for the feedback!

Very pretty.  Nice clean shot.

Recently I hired a couple models for my boudoir website (since real client's images are kept private) and I was shocked at how many model portfolios didn't have good clean shots that showed their look.  They had lots of funky editorial stuff, and I guess that shows they can pose, but I was interested in doing more "beauty" shots, as are cosmetic companies etc...  Granted I was sorta looking for non-model looking girls, but the point is, I wanted to see a good clean shot of their face and a good clean full length and they were few and far between.  I guess as a model you want to show how versatile you are?

Yes, but EVERY model needs to have a good headshot, with minimal makeup to show their natural look. Even better are two headshots, one smiling and one not. The people doing the hiring want to know if the model has good teeth. It's okay after that to include other edgier shots. A good model agency can tell from the basic headshot how versatile the model will be.

Right Marian, I was okay with makeup, but not theatrical stuff.

Seriously, aren't there model handbooks out there or something?  This was a common problem!

I should write a model handbook.... good idea, I'll get on that... with all my other ideas...

I don't know about you guys but I'm sort of tired of seeing the blurred out globby looking type of airbrushing. (You know, lots of gaussian blur on the face with sharpness painted back into the eyes and lips)

Which is not real airbrushing anyway, it just blurs out and hides the true detail of a face with lots of gaussian blur.
So I want my retouching to be as invisible as possible.
Very little on the shot above and I think it works pretty good as is. Natural!

Thats my thing right now anyway, more of a natural look, while I learn more advanced airbrushing techniques using layers, curves and layer masks. Not very good at it all yet. Anyone else learning this or have some good tutorials on it?

Howard - Ironically I just posted about this in the Glamour Editing thread.
I think there is a time and place for all different types of editing.  Obviously head shots are not a place where you want to do any false advertising.
Everyone also has different styles.  I personally do like to play with editing, but playing is for playing, editing for clients is different.

This is a good shot, it does appear natural.  I would hire this model.  That is a money shot Smiley

Thanks Ginny
I do play around with different effects also. I still use the gaussian technique, I'm just very subtle with it.

Here is an image with an affect I modifed and call it "Howard's Soft Pop" action. I usually pull it down quite a bit afterwards since it's heavy handed with softness, contrast and saturation but sometimes I really like the look. It doesn't work with all images but sometimes I apply it and like the results such as here.

This is the same image as above but cropped tight. I don't like the way I posed her left hand here so a tight crop works better.

That is really pretty, I think I like the tighter crop mainly because there is just too much of nothing on either side of her.  Cropping out the sides focuses more on her.

I did a shoot a couple months ago and one of the photographers booked a new (to him) model to shoot with a "regular" model earlier in the day.

When the girl showed up she was 20-30 pounds heavier than the photos on her portfolio suggested. My buddy asked her if she had gained some weight and she said those photos had been "shopped" for her.

He sent her home.

Did he explain to her that what may be good thing for soccer moms and eharmony, facebook, etc.; isn't exactly good for a working model?

Or patients. I've had patients lie by 40lbs before, and I'm using that weight to adjust their radioactive dosages! Tongue
