First post - my daughter Sarah & partner

Hello everyone, I'm Dave and I've just joined your forum. I'm looking forward to getting to know you. I like most types of photography but at the moment i'm concentrating on learning to shoot portrait, so here's one from my second home studio shoot. Dave.

Welcome aboard Dave.  Always good to see the work of another image maker so we can all learn by example or by critique.

I love the monotone quality of this image with all the browns in it.  The hair light was thoughtfully and correctly placed and the quality of the main light is very good.

While I would like to comment on several additional things, I have discovered over the years that the more intimate the image maker is with the subject the more resistant the image maker is to listen to constructive critique. So if you would like me to continue let me know. If not, have a great day.

Is there such a thing as a goutee light? Grin

Welcome, Dave! The lighting on the skin is gorgeous. I love the expressions.

Welcome,
yes, what everyone else said - nice lighting.
I like the expression a lot.  I think the image is a little overprocessed in Photoshop, especially in the eyes for my taste, but that's opinion, some people like it done more than that, so do what you like, I guess.

Dave,

A good general rule in portraiture is to shoot from the shadows into the light.  The lighting in this image is rather flat, and flat lighting is usually rather boring.  Had the main light been two stops brighter than the fill light and positioned at camera left, I feel the image would have much more impact.

Another good general rule is that the lips of the taller subject (usually the male) should be at the same height as the eyes of the lower subject. Again this adds some differentness to the image making it less static.  Staticness is the bane of portraiture.
