camera suggestions

I have a friend that is looking for a "good" camera but not "high end"

I told her the Nikon  D60 or D80 with the 18-200VR will probably do anything she wants.

What is the Canon equivalent? and the Olympus? any others?

I would go with the D60 or D90, unless she can find a good used D80 for the right price.  They are kind of the old kid now, the D60 was more or less its replacement, in my opinion.

Costco and Sam's Club both have a pretty good kit going on right now.  It's a box with the D60, two lenses, some memory, and a camera bag, and maybe some more stuff, not sure, I didn't look closely.  I think the whole deal was under $700.  Pictureline, a local store here in Utah, is doing the same deal so it's not just at the warehouse stores.

I really do recommend Olympus although I am not using them now.  The Evolt series are great, the lenses and flashes are really reasonably priced.  I LOVED my E-300.  It's the best camera I have had for skin tones.  It made beautiful outdoor pictures!  It doesn't handle high ISO settings as well as the Nikon though.

For a Canon SLR I wouldn't rule out the Rebel XSi. Otherwise I might look into Sony or another brand that has in-body IS. I've noticed that most people think they need to spend their money on the camera and not the lens. With in-body IS you can get a high end feature on a low end lens.

Take a look at Ken Rockwell's sites (www.kenrockwell.com).  He raves about the Nikon D40 for a "walk around" body.
