DIY Lightbox in a suitcase

Still shooting a little transparency film and need a cheap way to look at it?  Found this over on instructables.com.

The goal was to make a light box for my students to use that didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Went to the second-hand store and found a florescent light... ($4.99 with 50% off) then noticed a suitcase/briefcase ($3.99 with 50% off). I got them both and started thinking of ways to put them together.

would that put off enough light?

Don't know.  It just appealed to my geek side Cheesy Grin

I have contemplated buying a big piece of acrylic and then taping wax paper to the bottom, supporting it across two chairs or something then putting one of my studio lights underneath it. Not as cool as an old suitcase, I guess.

I've got an old lightbox sitting on the closet floor in my study.  Hasn't gotten any use in at least 3 or 4 years.  Shame too because I really like throwing out sheets of transparency film and looking at it through a loupe.  I've got an Elan 7 sitting in the closet that I may need to break out.  Or maybe I should finally break down and buy the 645 or 67 camera that I keep thinking about.

Does Fuji still make Velvia and Provia?  Those were my two favorites.

are you talking about something you use to trace things?

I thought you meant a clean white surface you use for product photography.  Perhaps I am confused.

You can use 'em to trace, but that's not what I used mine for.  Before I started shooting digital I shot almost totally transparency film.  So instead of pulling up a folder of images in Bridge you'd have a box full of slides strewn out over the board and used a loupe to pick out favorites.  Tough on the back, but a lot of fun.

OH yeah film... I used to shoot with that stuff... seems like a lifetime ago... I have tried to block out the memories of the sick chemical smell of the dark room (oh and the nasty red light).

I actually sort of miss the smell of film.  Never did much darkroom work though.  Had an art teacher that taught me less in the semester class than my dad did the night before class started just showing me how to use his camera.  About a dozen of us had projects ruined because she mislabled a chemical bottle so she gave us the class period to make up a project that we had previously had a week to do.  Made me a little gunshy to process my own film.

I grew up with a dark room in my house and in the last house we lived in before I got married (at age 20) it was in the room next to mine... that could be why I don't miss it.  My husband's family also had a dark room, what are the odds?  He liked it, but it was on the other side of the house.
It's not that the chemicals are really that over powering, I just didn't care for the smell.
I didn't do much in the dark room either at home or in high school, so I really don't know that much about it.  I do say this all the time though - digital took away the things I hated about film, kept the good things and added so much more fun stuff.

I've thought about doing some film work again. HCP here in Houston is getting ready to open their darkroom again for rentals and they have a large format scanner. My S-i-L has a 4x5 that she hasn't used in quite some time for me to use. It would be nice to get some swings and tilts again.
