Shooting Old Cars

First try at photographing an old car for my portfolio. I want to start doing more of these for some of the local clubs, since there are no photographers in the area.

First reaction was that the reflection at the back of the car was kind of distracting. I actually spent a good 15 seconds trying to figure out what it was before I even looked at the rest of the photo.

I love the color on that car. I don't know what the situation was. But if you could have added light to the front side too, to bring out the chrome and details on the front; and lit the interior with a flash also I think it would be a truly killer photo.

Thanks, John. Smiley

It was at a Classic car show in the oldest wooden structure in the US, an old blimp hanger! The lighting is all over the place. The huge hanger door was open, there are all those lights overhead along the interior of the hanger. There were sooooooooo many people around that it was "shoot quick" when no one is in the frame situation, haha. But I have written down your suggestions for when I do it for someone. Thanks!

The blacks look blue on my monitor.  Light in the front of the car would have been nice.  Cars seem hard to photograph, so I haven't done it and so I really don't know what I am talking about.

I have been in that hanger and it is dark.  The car def needs more light.  My personal opinion is that classic cars should be well lit to show off the paint and chrome that makes the car.  Now if this had been a beater or "rat rod" as they are called dark would work.

Thanks! Definitely things to keep in mind for the next shoot. Every Tuesday they have classic cars on display just down the street from where I work, so hopefully I'll get lots of practice.

What is a rat rod??

I loved this car:

I like that car made to look like a plane as well.  A rat rod is a old car older than 1960 that to most people would be a beater or hunk of junk but the owner loves.  It is a car that has been made to run but not "fixed" up but left with the "patina" only age can create.  I have attached a pic I found on flickr by Chris Warburton

What I've done when I wanted a photo of a car I really like is asked the owner if he/she would move it over to the corner so I could get a photo of it without any people in the shot and I offer to send them a copy via e-mail that they could use to print out a 4x6 or put in their online album.

Sometimes they can move the car sometimes they cant.

this is a "beater" I'm not sure who owns it other than he/she is a tattoo artist

A "beater" that can probably out run a V8 Mustang Smiley
