They all look a little flat and underexposed to me. I know shooting in a gym can be a royal p.i.t.a. I know, I've fought with bad lighting shooting high school football. The school did build a new stadium this year and the lighting is better; I not going to say great. Fast glass and high ISO are about the only thing to help. But you have no DoF wide open so you have to learn to anticipate the athletes movements and be ready to get the shot before they are. I also find it helps to get in for closer shots of the players. Overall shots of the action usually don't carry over well in stills. This means getting access to court side or longer glass, which gives you less DoF. Just like a portrait the eyes are usually what you want to be tack sharp.

I like the movement and the reflection in the floor in the last one.

Lighting is beyond horrible in that gym.  I graduated school there in 87 and those are the same lights.  They were there long before I got there.  I wish they would update the lights.  Those are shot at F1.8  ISO 800 (1600 is to noisy on my camera).  I can go anywhere in the gym and shoot but the only fast glass I have is a 50mm f1.8.  I think I will move around a bit next game.

Yeah, move in close, your timing is great, which is half the battle.  I would like to see a few right after they have hit the ball.  I know that's asking for a lot, but try it.

I have plenty of those as well Susie

I think you can use curves in your editor to raise the contrast a bit which will also make them less flat. can't really fix the DOF but you can crop the bad out which would in turn bring us closer to the subject.. and perhaps move the subject out of the dead center of the frame... [grin]

Yeah maybe move the subject to the edge a little so you see more of the net.  Of course if you are going for closeups they can be centered.

I'll try to get some of my football shots up tomorrow that I'll take tonight. It'll show what can be done with an old Canon and a used Sigma lens.
