I was at a photog get together last week to meet
zarias.com and he gave a little speech on the downfall of gear envy. G.A.S. as he calls it (gear acquisition syndrome. To make it short he pointed out how he put himself waaay into debt buying gear he couldn't even use well because he thought it would make his photos better. He ended up broke, divorced, and working at Kinko's. After he crawled out of despair and into the light again he started off the second time with a borrowed camera with a couple lenses, and a cheap speedlite. He worked all the jobs he used to think were beneath him to pay off his credit cards, open a studio, and have a family again. His advice was to "rock what ya got" and forget about the latest and greatest, rent what you need when you need it, and don't expect gear to make you a better photographer.
He has good taste in beer too.
