Groom's Pic advice

Alright I need a little advice.
I just booked a wedding which is a few months away and the groom mentioned something. He said his mother has 16x20's of each of his older brothers by themselves in their tux's hanging on her wall and they are full length. So he requested this shot specifically.
Now, it's one I normally do, except usually 3/4 length, because groom's are usually and obviously a lot taller than they are wide, and I crop everything 4x5 (4x6 is just to hard to make bigger prints from, ratios are way off). I do 3/4 in order to avoid a tall person centered in the frame with lots on the sides.

With this one that I need to do full length should I pose him next to something of interest to share the frame (he is tall, 6'3" but I would have the same problem with anyone)? How do I avoid a tall thin centered subject?

Doing full lengths of the bride is so much easier, the dress flaring out at the bottom fills the frame nicely.

I know this sounds like a basic question, and I know I could take a fine image, but I would rather nail it if I can.

Watch some James Bond movies. And have your finger poised on the pause button.

Seriously. There's more scenes of a guy in a tux, that is all about the guy in a tux, than any other genre out there. It should help get the creativity flowing about how to light and pose a tall guy in a tux. Make him look like a movie star.

GREAT advice!
I am such a visual person, I need to see examples to completely "get" it.

This sounds dumb but Sear's catalog is a great resource, but pretty basic, not really sexy or edgy, but for dad and grandpa it's great.

I am still concerned about the ratio, I guess I just need an interesting backdrop.

You're in Utah, some of the best natural backdrops around. Think classy refined clothing in a rough outdoor setting. Backdrop feature filling the back of the frame, long lens it and compress a huge feature into him and make it seam larger than life.

Find out what they have from the past weddings:  Where they shot outside at the church or park?  Where they shot at home?  Where they shot at the reception?

I do think that it is important that you shoot something that you like and that makes you stand out, but Mom may want something that fits with the existing photographs and decor.

I asked, they are all shot outdoors outside an LDS temple, which is where this couple is getting married (different temple, but that won't be a problem).
I did want to make sure his picture would mesh with the others.
