Nuclear Sub encounter

Today, while on the ferry from Bremerton to Seattle, WA, we were told we had to slow down for a Navy submarine. Needless to say, I ran out on deck with my camera:

Suddenly, this Coast Guard boat came into view and stayed just in front of where I was standing. The guy had his hand on the gun the entire time.

I don't know anything about subs, but my husband said by the design of it, and the location of the end "fin", he thinks it's a nuke.

It was flying an American flag, but nowhere on it was one painted that I could see, but we're assuming it was one of ours. Smiley

Needless to say, it was really exciting to see!

Is it okay to admit that I was a tad nervous taking pictures of it whilst some guy had a gun between it and me? Tongue

EEEEEEEEEEK! I was wrong! I went back and blew up one of the images, and the flag I thought was attached to the sub is actually on a ship BEHIND the sub! I fail!

It's a Seawolf-class submarine, most likely the USS Jimmy Carter which is home-based at Bangor Annex of Naval Base Kitsap, Washington, and repairs/modifications on subs stationed there are done at PSNS Bremerton, right where we live, and where this picture was taken.  <----so says the hubby. Grin

Not much use for a flag when you stay 300' underwater for months at a time. I have a feeling if it wasn't one ousr the welcoming party may have been a bit larger.

So cool!
A bit mad that you get beautiful scenery all the time AND adventure!
I agree with John. I would have to assume that if it were not a US vessel the scene would have been quite a lot more hectic.
awesome catch!
Thanks.
