No windoz

[grin]
on a dare, I took an old laptop, installed UBUNTU and after a couple hours installing and configuring stuff I have a working computer I can edit, write (and read Word documents and spreadsheets) edit photos and more.

total cost for all the software, paying full retail price is .... $0 [grin]

gimp isn't photoshop but I think a lot of what I can't do is not knowing how.

The laptop was painfully slow running XP now its faster than my Vista laptop.

So guys, take that old slow laptop, and convert it over to the "dark side" You'll have a great laptop to take places you would be worried about the "good one" getting broken.

Congrats, Bob!!

I had to reinstall Windows XP on my home computer after a horrible worm invaded it. It's never been the same. It locks up, crashes, and takes forever to load even a simple txt page. When I open Photoshop, I get an error every time and it can't remember any of my customizations, reverting back to the default each time I load it. It's a mess, but I know it can be fixed if I could just figure out what to do. Tongue

Re-format and start over.

Check out the new blog. http://www.jklebphoto.wordpress.com

Or go Office Space on it and just use a baseball bat.

Odd timing.  I just reformatted and reinstalled XP on my mother-in-law's computer.  Can't see her agreeing to Ubuntu though.

One of my computers is running Ubuntu, and I really like it.  It's setup as my file / web development server.  I've also got a Vista x64 desktop and a MacBook.  I'm pretty much an agnostic on operating systems Cheesy Grin

Never done it, but I've been really tempted to go Office Space on a few computers.

I don't even know what Ubuntu is but I am not married to Vista that's for sure, in fact I can't wait until I get the courage up to serve it some divorce papers.
I want a Mac, but I'm getting old and set in my ways. I don't know if I have the ability to learn new tricks any more.

Having made the switch, going Mac isn't all that bad.  It took a couple of weeks to get used to different keystrokes, but after that I can go back and forth between Windows and Mac pretty easily.

Ubuntu is Linex. Its just another operating system like Vista, XP, or any of the various Mac versions. Anyone can feel free to correct my errors with this (I know some, but not a lot), but Linex/Ubuntu is a open source operating system so the programs/software for it are free. For example, Gimp was made for Linex.

Bob, I don't know how much you actually know about Gimp. There is a good chance that you know a lot more than I do and we probably use the programs for different things, but here is my 2 cents: I used Gimp for about 8 months (I was Photoshop-less) and although I prefer Photoshop, I got really used to Gimp and it was hard for me to start using Photoshop again when I got CS4 for Christmas because doing the same things are done different ways. Some of them are just slight differences, but some are more difficult to figure out. It takes awhile to get used to it, but I found that I could do a lot on there that I didn't realize I could at first.

Just one Cheesy Grin  It's Linux, not Linex.

To expand on what Lauren said, Linux is an open source operating system.  What that means is that anyone with the ability is able to download the source and create their own distribution.  And there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different distributions.  Ubuntu, Fedora, and Red Hat are 3 of the more popular ones.

ooh how very rouge.
Thanks for the explaination.

Yeah Lauren, I believe gimp can do quite a lot more in capable hands than mine. The goal was to have a home/office capable computer that can perform any task needed and spend NO money on any of the software.

The added benefit is that the Linux Laptop, is an 800mhz single core Pentium. Its not powerful enough to run Vista, and runs XP well but slow. With UBUBTU its faster than Vista computers that have blazing processors.
