Clients' opinions of websites

Came across a blog post about a new service called snapm.  Looks to be still another directory for photographers to sign up for, with one major catch.  They want a 15% booking fee for anything you do through their site.

But, that's not what caught my eye.  It was the following comment.

I jumped when I saw this post, as i've been looking at garish fullscreen flash pages with Jack Johnson or Iron & Wine playing in the background for weeks. It gets really tiring to find a site with great photos but when you look for the cost it is listed as 'investment' instead of 'price' Tongue

Admittedly this was on a fairly techie blog, so the opinions of websites might be a little different than most people.  But it does seem like a lot of photography forums, although not this one so much, tend to discuss websites as "what template should I use" or "does anyone know where I can find music for my site".

And I know I've posted about this before, but it seems like a lot of photographer's websites out there are pretty, but violate all sorts of guidelines for web design and usability that come from people that do nothing but web design and study usability.

I know I've harped about this before but I HATE websites that play music. I usually have my iTunes music going, which is something I have a considerable financial investment in (I buy a lot of music). I hate it when I am surfing on the net and some crappy over-hyped commercial song starts playing over what I am listening to. I can't find the place on the website FAST enough to turn it off, seriously.

And yeah, all photographers have the same flash sites. I have seen the same templates numerous times. Keep in mind that I do peruse photographers websites more than the average non-photographer, but they have to be noticing it too.
To be fair though, the flash websites are a good option if you don't want to spend the time doing your own website. I have just spent considerable hours re-vamping both my websites and I am not even finished yet and I am afraid they don't look half as spectacular as those same 5 flash templates I see over and over... so who knows what the answer is?

Oh and the price/investment thing (warning, I'm in a "I'm gonna tell ya how I really feel" mood). I think it just boils down to that fact that most photographers have big fat un-deserved egos. Making up fancy names for crap on your website does not make people want to spend more money with you, it makes them feel like you have an attitude.

My guess is that to earn success we should try being good, hardworking and genuine people with clean websites and great customer service.
The attitude schtick may work for some, but I bet it's rare.

And take all this opininated crap you just read from me with a grain of salt. We all know I am far from being as successful as I hope to be someday, it remains to be seen if I have any answers.

Single best feature of Windows Vista - you can control the volume, or totally mute, individual programs.  I've got FireFox muted pretty much all the time.

As far as price / investment I lean towards using price or cost.  If I'm looking for a service, I'm looking for a price.  The first time I saw the word investment I assumed the page was going to list all of the equipment that the photographer had invested in.  Look through your search engine traffic.  You'll probably have "wedding photographer prices in XYZ", not "what's the investment for wedding photography in XYZ."

Oooh, I'll look into that, thanks. I do use Pandora sometimes. I guess I could pull that up in IE and surf in the now-muted Firefox, or vice versa.
