My new website

Pages [1] 2
It's kind of simple, and I want to make all the photos in the portfolio section the same size and decrease their file sizes and put more in, but it will give you enough to get an idea of how it works.

http://www.wildmaven.org/marianmurdoch/ Eventually, when I'm done playing around, my domain of marianmurdoch.com will point to it.

I found that I'm the #1 hit on Google if you type in my city and photography.  Cheesy

Looks good, nice and simple. I don't mind the portfolio images being different sizes.
The graphic at the head of your site, the green background with the white flower is pretty, but you could utilize your space by putting a stunning image there.

Every part of your website, every inch is real estate that you can use to sell your product. You shouldn't jam pack it with stuff, but everything should have a purpose, from the pictures you use, to the calculated white space, to the graphics. And all of that is easier said than done.  Big Grin

It just seems that the exact empty space of that graphic is prime real estate. It's right where your eye would naturally go, most companies put their logo there.

How about now? Smiley

Much better. I would probably try and make it a little less cluttered, I like the graphic flourishes but they take away from your images a little. I am not really one to talk though, my new wedding website has a really bold damask background that I think is a touch distracting.
I think it's great for now, but try a couple things when you have time.
I find that when I change things over and over again I eventually come up with something professional and far better than my first attempt.

Don't you dare think I am being too critical either  Smiley I just want you to have the best dang website you can! Cause you deserve it.

I like it! If its possible, turn off right-click on the fine art photo site.

I'm going to disagree with blocking right clicks.  It's one of those disagreements that almost gets to a Mac vs. PC or Canon vs. Nikon level in some places though.  The way I browse I use the right button quite a bit and it's irritating when sites break that.  Usability studies also usually blast blocking and if someone wants the image they'll get it anyway.

Really nice slideshow script.  Haven't come across that one yet, or even seen many JS slideshows that aren't jerky.

Love the shot of the groom juggling.  The wife's expression is perfect.

You might want to add your location to more than just your info page.  Most searches will include the location or will be geolocated by the search engine.

I have several hundred photos on myspace/facebook/etc that earned me nothing.

and if someone wants the photo they will have it for sure. Its the other 98% that would rather fork over a buck to have an image than figure out how to "get" it.

Yeah, your location is on the front, but I would spell out Washington and make sure it's prominant.

I am going to agree with Ryan about the right clicks. I use it a lot to open pages in new tabs. I know there is a key stroke for that, but I forget what it is. I get so irked when right-click is blocked.

Maybe try putting new images on your website after you are sure you have all your sales, and/or watermark. I don't do either of these, so take that advice for what it's worth Smiley

I think it looks great. My fav shot in the portfolio is the two boys in cowboy hats. Also, I'm not a fan of blocking right clicks either. I like to open new tabs that way too.

I want to add that I've always enjoyed your B&W and landscapes posts on the forum, but seeing them all together on you site shows a personal style that makes them fit well together. You might think about putting together a couple books to sell at the farmers markets and online.

Susie, don't worry, I'm taking it all as constructive criticism. Smiley

Ryan, thanks! That was one of my favorite shots from that wedding. The slideshow feature is really easy, too, and I can add photos anytime without having to write any code myself.

As for spelling out Washington, we here in Washington state have a disadvantage because of Washington D.C. Stupid thing. They should rename that darn place. There was a push to change the name of Washington about twenty years ago. Some wanted "Martha" (gag), and some wanted Evergreen. I think they should just change Washington D.C. to just D.C. and let us have our state name. Grin

I've never been a fan of restricting right clicks, either.

John, thanks! I want to put together some books, but the price to get them printed is prohibitive since I'd have to charge more than that to make a profit. If I could only find a place that does it for a reasonable cost.

Sign them and call it a limited edition.

Yeah Marian, I agree, try making a couple. You won't be out of pocket too much. If they don't sell don't do it again (and then give them as Christmas gifts so you won't be out anything anyway). Sign the books, call them limited editions (and then if you do make more make them different) and put the price you need to on them. Don't limit yourself by trying to guess what people will spend (that is my biggest weakness, so I say this from experience).

Hahhahah. Even still, most photo books are at least $25 to get made, then there's the shipping and handling. So, before I even sell them, there's $30. I'd have to charge at least $40 to make it worth my time and I don't know anyone here in this rural community who would spend $40 on a book from a visit to a Farmer's market.

Is $40 more or less than you charge for a decent sized print? If it's equal or less than I'd say there's value in it; a collection of images versus just one.
