The myth of DPI

We've talked about this here a few times. I've even posted a few images. But I haven't come across another page that explains it quite this well why DPI doesn't matter for the images you post online.

Yes . . . but . . . I pretty much always size at 72DPI and select the SIZE in inches that I want the image to take up. This allows me to get away with doing less math!

But 72dpi has nothing to do with the size on screen. I might be running a 19" monitor at 800x600 and you might be running the same monitor at 1600x1200. The same image is going to be much bigger on my monitor.

This is true, but everything is relative: This does allow me to control the size of each image in relation to each other and the size of the screen. I understand that it doesn't mean anything by itself.
