tinEye

Wow and Wow! I just installed this as a Firefox plugin and am impressed. All I have to do is right click one of my images in my gallery (or any other place I have it displayed) and it will tell me if that image is found anywhere else on the web. Thus far, most have come back with 0 results, but it did find a couple of my images that I had used as an avatar on other sites, so I know it works! Fantastic, and it's free!

how does it work? Is it looking for the same file name? or what?

"TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks. When you submit an image to be searched, TinEye creates a unique and compact digital signature or 'fingerprint' for it, then compares this fingerprint to every other image in our index to retrieve matches. TinEye can even find a partial fingerprint match. TinEye does not typically find similar images (i.e. a different image with the same subject matter); it finds exact matches including those that have been cropped, edited or resized."

That's awesome! I'm definitely intrigued! Thanks! :-)

Well, I was going to ask a question but it looks like you beat me to it. I was wondering how well it worked with images that have been cropped or resized.

Sounds like a pretty cool tool.

TinEye caught a frequent poster on Photocamel.com.  This joker used to post some really beautiful images, but when asked about how he lit them or what Photoshop technique he used on them he was always vague, or said he was too busy to answer right now but would get back later.  Well someone for some reason got suspicious and ran one of his images through TinEye and it got a hit!  It found the identical image, but it was not on his website but another photographer's site!  So then we ran all of his previous images through it and most of them were stolen.  We banned him for life.

I just checked a few of my photo's that I know are on different sites and didn't get any hits.

Benji, that's horrible! Someone would have to have such low self esteem to need gratification like that by using someone else's work. Sheesh.

Yeah, I did the same thing. :-( Is it because they haven't indexed the entire Internet yet? I noticed on their home page that it had a place to submit a website.

I submitted mine. Figure I'll give them a few days and see if it works.
