Free Action

I didn't know what to title this post..... I wanted to keep it short, but advertising free action is kinda odd.
Anyway, So if you guys haven't downloaded the free sets of actions from www.thepioneerwoman.com yet go do it NOW!

Did you download them? Good. Now check this out! I tried the Heartland action from set 2 just to see what it would do to this shot of the temple. But on accident I somehow selected the little drop down list in the layers palette (let me know if you need a screenshot, cause I don't know what it's called) and I didn't realize it and I had used my scroll wheel to zoom in on the image, well instead of zooming it scrolled through the options on the list and I stopped on "soft light". Well I ended up with the image on the right of this "before and after" image! It's way different from what the Heartland action is supposed to do. I love it though. I tried it on a few other images and it's spectacular!

That looks really awesome! I tried to duplicate it, but I couldn't find where "soft light" was in the steps. Did you start the action at soft light, or end it there? Or did you just do that one step? Huh?

I ran the action. The top layer should look like sepia-ish light image and the bottom layer should be your original image. Then with the top layer selected choose "soft light" and then adjust the opacity if the effect is too crazy. I'm not so sure this would be good for close up portraits at full strength and then flatten.
Let me know if that makes sense, if not I will do screen shots or something.

Okay, I get it now. I just blanked and didn't realize that "soft light" was the blend mode. Opps.  Tongue  Here is my experiment:

Subtle, but I like the "after". You did them the opposite way I did and it took me a second to figure it out.

It is subtle, but I like it too. I accidentally placed them like that, and was just too lazy to change it, so I labeled them instead. Lol. But, I went to a Photoshop conference last Friday in Salt Lake and they said that sometimes its better to show people the "after" first because its harder to pick out the specific changes made and all they notice is how good it looks; so I'll pretend like I did it on purpose.  Tongue
