Nikon Speedlight SB-600

Mine just arrived. Just taking it out of the box, I'm already impressed. This thing is so solid compared to the one I had for my Minolta. Today, I'm planning on trying out a lot of the features (I'm one of those 'push every button' kind of gals) and will post the results. Smiley Maybe I'll get my fake head out of storage and play with that! Grin

Congrats it's a powerful little light! Make sure you fully understand the wireless lighting settings. Sometimes it doesn't fire, so make sure you practice a lot before relying on it.

the biggest problem I've had with mine is the IR sensor is on the right side so if you put the flash on the right side of the camera in commander mode it won't "see" it. (you can point it backwards and turn the head around. (but you gotta remember)

Thus far tonight:

My favorite is the flash to ceiling. And the first one (no flash?) scares me a little... Lol

flash to the ceiling but on a real person you really risk raccoon eyes. Get a rubber band and a white index card and attach it to your light to bounce light into their eyes. I leave the rubber band on all the time and just carry index cards with me.

Where exactly do you put the index card? I'm not really sure I understand the placement.

I actually was watching a training video last night and the photographer used that thin foam that they sell in craft stores (Its about the size of a piece of paper and comes in all different colors). And he had cut that to the right shape and attached it with velcro to his flash like that so he could remove it when he wanted to. I think I like the rubber band idea of attaching it instead though.

I was also wondering how much of a pain it would be to carry around a poster board size of white foamcore, and place that wherever I wanted to bounce the flash off of that...

I like to think cheap.  Big Grin

I have this awesome thing I haul around to bounce light off of when I need something larger than an index card - it's called my husband. Seriously, he always wears a white dress shirt to weddings so I can bounce light off him to get a nice side light. I think I mentioned this before. I use it for wedding cakes a lot so you can see the white on white detail you miss with a straight on flash.

** I use this ** but its really not much more than a fancy card with rubber band. (I can push it forward to act more like a softbox is the reason I like it)

That's cool Bob. I have actually been looking for a mini softbox to put on my flash, but that is a good idea.

I was looking around at a craft store the other day and found a little padded mailing pouch that is about 7 inches each side, but its silver. It the same color as the shiny side of foil. I'm going to see what I can make out of that. :-)

No clue how well this works, but I came across a post at Lifehacker last week that linked to a printable bounce.

And if that was in a different context, it would be one of the creepiest quotes I've ever heard.

I'm going to put that as my facebook status and see what happens.

Hey Marian, wonder if anyone noticed the catch-light is painted on her eyes... [grin]

I actually painted my fake head's eyss gloss black so the real catch-lights would show.
