Facebook will rule the worldLibrary Thread

... or at least the internet.

Article on how companies are shifting away from their own communities and working within existing online communities like Facebook. Not sure I agree with everything in the article, but it's an interesting thought.

The Society of Nuclear Medicine has stopped putting updates on their home page in favor of doing updates through Facebook. Tongue

We have a couple facebook contacts with some of our oversees vendors on personal accounts. It's quicker to get a hold of them with a question that way than to use company email or a phone call. People ignore work email, but not a facebook message. I'm just waiting to see when collection companies start trying to use it to get payments instead of phone calls.

There is actually a billboard here that only has their facebook page as website. I don't remember the company; I'll have to look closer next time.

Facebook pages are free (unless you pay for their ads); websites are not. I pay about $150 a year just to keep my website online (hosting and domain). I have designed most of it with my friend and the help of Wordpress templates that we customized. So mine is still cheap to maintain. But Facebook doesn't cost anything and its fairly easy to share with others. After adding about 135 of my friends, I'm starting to get some people who I don't know becoming my "fans."

my personal page is my business page, not by design. I'm doing a photo shoot with two girls Saturday. Both want to use the images on yoga and health facebook and myspace pages. I do expect a bit of a surge of visits... [grin] one of them has 430 friends and the other 2,645

Last week Facebook overtook Google as the most visited site.  Facebook had overtaken Google for a day or so before, mostly around holidays.  But this was the first time that it overtook the big G for a full week.  The last time Google wasn't the most visited site was in 2007 when in came in second to MySpace.

Does that mean that Facebook might be a trend like MySpace? Some things come, hit hard, and then slowly disappear. Any thoughts?

I think that will be the case eventually. Depends on how fast someone comes up with a better idea. People walked until they could ride horses, then took trains, cars, airplanes, and hopefully one day Scotty can beam us up. Everything evolves.

MySpace does seem to be dying out a little, although it's still a heavily visited site.  You just don't hear as many kids talking about their MySpace pages as you do their Facebook pages.  I really think it's the type of site that'll be really influential over the next few years, not necessarily a specific social site.

My problem with all of this mess is that's it's hard to keep up with everything coming in.  I've got several email addresses for different projects, although I've started consolidating them and only use 2 or 3 as actual email accounts.  Everything else just forwards.  Add to that a Twitter account, Facebook, forums, and all sorts of other stuff it's hard to keep track of when you said what to who, and where you said it.  I do like being able to keep up with people as easily as we can now though.

Most people don't like myspace because of the hard to read personal pages and the music you're forced to listen to when you visit.

I think Facebook will get too big and people will go back to myspace for a while then back to the message boards. The message boards are evolving as well, some of the new engines allow users to grant "friend" status to other members for access to personal stuff. The difference between what the message boards will become and the current facebook is theme base and moderation. (photo forum, bird forum, artist forum, etc)

That's just my opinion.. [shrug]

I know what you mean about keeping up. My makeup artist is a busy person and doesn't sit at the computer all day like I do. So when I need to find out her schedule for a shoot I text her. I forget what I asked and what she said... email is easier for me to keep track of.
I have several emails that all forward to my comcast account. I also have a gmail account that all my business emails are forwarded to for backup.
A lot of time is spent communicating and I don't even use my Facebook account.

Amen. That's exactly why I stopped using my myspace page as much. It still exists, but I probably only check it once a month at most. I hate their ads on the home page, it makes to too slow to load. Facebook is gradually getting slower with all the applications that can be added, but it is generally much cleaner and faster than myspace is. I do think that facebook is a trend that will die down with time. In my opinion, Google has a longer "shelf life."
