OK I'm confused. The first thing that pops in my mind when I see this is "Why?" but a lot of people say that about my work so I can't be too harsh.

There is no "subject" the light is flat and the lack of direct light makes it seem dull.

Regardless of my opinions, thanks for posting and joining our little community. If you post on any of the other boards, more people can comment on your work, this board only allows certain people to make comments.

While I think the lighting is fine (I wouldn't call it flat the cigarette on the right is almost blown out and you can see definite shadows on the others). I am not a fan of the composition. It's fairly centered and uninteresting. I would like to see a more creative angle or crop, as it stands it's just a "pretty good picture of an ashtray". I enjoy pictures of every day items, but you need to find a way to make it unique and to hold someone's attention.

Keep in mind that I am a portrait photographer. I am not strong in still lifes or "artsy" shots.

Thanx,

The other critiques I get but I don't get the "Why?” Why not?

In any case I just wanted to throw something up to test the site and see if I can trust it with my (what I think are) better photographs.

I understand there's a difference between a professional’s opinion and regular people (had a few that liked this. However this is the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Thanx again.

As far as my question "why?" I mean you didn't get the reason of the photo across to me. Something caused you to think "I'll photograph that ash tray" my problem is what ever that was you didn't show.

I don't believe I ever was asked "why". Outside of documentary photography, Why photograph anything? I think the meaning of a photo resides with the viewer. If for example you are someone who has struggled with quitting smoking, it may mean something.

How about this?

OK not every photo has a story behind it. But I believe it makes it a better photo if the viewer "sees" more than just what's there.

Your second image, the empty amusement park, could tell a thousand stories.

it would be better if you had cropped it differently **rule of thirds**
