Bridal Portrait - Krista

Ok, I am ready to do this.  I have never posted in these type of critique sections before.
This wasn't necessarily the best of the session but I really like how it turned out.  It was shot intentionally horizontal.  I would like to do more of this type of shot and would like some critical comments to improve.
Thanks

The "old pros" should be along shortly, but in the meantime I'll jump in with a few thoughts  Grin

I really like that she's not in the "look at the camera and hold your bouquet at your waist" pose.  Something different is usually a good thing as long as it looks good.  And it does, and I'd imagine your bride is happy with this shot.

The first thing I noticed is that it looks dark.  Whether that's a function of the camera underexposing or the post processing I don't know, but it does look like she's about to get rained on.  A little bit of fill or a reflector would help a lot.

She's standing squared off to the camera, which is generally not a flattering position.  She's pretty skinny so it's not as much of an issue as it could be, but I think it would look better if her body was rotated to her right.

What bothers me the most is that she doesn't look happy.  Maybe that's the look y'all were going for, but shouldn't a bride look really happy on her wedding day?

The contrast between the green grass, flowers, and white dress is great.  I really like that the horizon isn't visible and that the grass covers the entire background.

First, I like it like it is, pretty unusual for an American photographer as, as far as I know, this is not a common pose among US photographers. You deserve (a little) praise for that way of thinking out of the box!

There are a few flaws however.
This pose is - in my opinion OK -, but the light is coming from the wrong side or better, if she would have stood on the other side, it would have improved the image quite a lot.
In my opinion the crop is a little too tight, she needs IMHO some space to breathe.
When you photograph someone from the side, do it properly. There should not be anything visible from the eye on the other side. Personally I would have preferred if she would be looking at the left side of the image instead of downwards.

"She's standing squared off to the camera, which is generally not a flattering position.  She's pretty skinny so it's not as much of an issue as it could be, but I think it would look better if her body was rotated to her right." Thta is quite remarkable, usually I agree with Ryan, but this time I don't. Thanks to her "skinnyness" (does that word exist?) this is one of the rare opportunities to have someone standing squared off to the camera.

The background seems, like the whole image, a little too dark to me, but this monitor hasnot been calibrated, so I cannot judge this properly. I love the background however, especially if it is somewhat lighter. Well chosen!

All in all, an image that has potential, although it leaves some things to be wished to be improved. Go on on this path, it might bring the opportunity to create an own, unusual, style.

Thanks Guys!
I really appreciate everything that was said.
I especially learned that my image is too dark (post processing is the reason).  I need to spend more time on getting the expression right.  The image was taken from the front while another photographer was shooting detail shots of the corset back of her dress.  She isn't supposed to look sad... just serious.
I also need to watch my lighting, I try to, but sometimes I get lazy, no excuse.
Thanks again, having a place like this on a forum is very beneficial and I appreciate the time it took.

Ginny,

Well done on thinking outside that box. A lovely shoot but as an idea how about cropping it a touch more letterbox so that we are pulled into the bride this will lead to her eyes looking down. Sad, happy, sorrow, joy are all emotions felt at a wedding so dont always subscribe to the smile for me shooter. The bride is feeling something and you have captured it.

Well done again and thats for sharing

Cheers and Beers
