Help finding a sync tool
« on: July 20, 2008, 08:56:02 AM »
I'm looking for a way to sync a USB thumb drive the computer when it's inserted for backup.  The more data I stick on this little drive the worse it would be if it got lost, and as small as they are that's a real possibility.

Here's what I'd like to find.
- Auto runs when the thumb drive is inserted
- If it's inserted into computer A backup to a specific directory, computer B a different directory, any other computer do nothing.
- And I'd really like a popup window that tells me it's working, although that's not a deal breaker

Well, after pretty much giving up on finding what I was looking for I just happened across a workable solution today.  It's called Toucan and was written by the PortableApps.com people (cool site btw if you've never seen their stuff).

I'm already using a program called P-Start on each of my thumb drives.  Once I put Toucan on each of 'em and setup a sync profile I just added an icon to P-Start for 'Toucan.exe backupUSB' and it'll take the files from my USB and copy them to 'My Documents/backup/driveName'.  It's not totally automated, but at least I'm more likely to remember to double click when the window comes up than I am to manually copy everything over.

good info.  I don't use thumb drives, but my husband does.
