how much equipment do you have
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:17:33 AM »
So, Marian's thread on dust made me wonder how much equipment the rest of you have.  I am curious.  I, honestly, don't have much, but here is my list:

Cameras:
Olympus E-300 body
Olympus lens 14-42mm
Olympus FL50 flash with bracket and synch cord
Nikon D80 body
Nikon lens 18-135mm
Nikon SB600 flash

Equipment:
5 in 1 42" reflector
2 cheap tripods from Walmart
small camera bag
too many memory cards to count, lots of brands.

Lighting:
3 Alienbee B800 flash units
1 Alienbee medium softbox
1 cheap shoot through white umbrella
1 homemade aluminum foil modifier :)
3 10 foot air cushioned stands
light meter (don't remember the brand)
remote flash trigger thingy (I don't want to walk downstairs to look)

I think that's it.

Camera:
Canon 20d
Sigma 18-55 kit
Sigma 55-200 kit
Canon 50/1.4
a few filters, nothing fancy except a really nice polarizer that I don't have a lens to fit it anymore

Equipment:
Stroboframe and sync cord
5 in 1 42" reflector
tripod
some 4gig memory cards
Big roll around pelican case for travel
Lowepro backpack for walking, everyday stuff, and the laptop

Lighting:
580ex w/stofen
Vivitar 285hv
2 eight foot air cushioned stands
White and silver reflective umbrellas
Cactus triggers and transmitter
17x40 homemade hot light strip softbox that will probably set the house on fire if I keep using it
Some homemade backdrops and modifiers
Baseball bat bag for the stands, umbrellas, tripod and various little junk to take on location. Works great and it was $12 at Wal-Hell.

On the list:
Better versions of the two zooms I already have, plus a 10-20mm. A fast 24-70 or 28-70 would be nice too if I get many more event gigs.
A second body for backup. Probably a 40d or a 5d and use my current one as backup.
One or two more Vivitars with triggers, stands, etc.
Light meter.

Anything after that I have to rethink the primary income source.

14f3.5 Sigma
16f2.8 Sigma Fisheye
17-35f3.5 Sigma
18-125f3.5-5.6 Sigma
28-105f2.8 Tamron

300f2.8 Kiev

Nikon SB600 and SB800 flashes
Sigma flash (iTTL compatible)

Three Quantum QFlashes (1 T and 2 T2s)
Three Quantum Turbo batteries
Six Sunpak 544 flashes
Six Quantum FreeWire radios
Big bag of stands

Bogen tripod with ball head
Bag of light stands (6 or  8)

Two DynaLight 500ws packs with two heads each

This ignores all of my film gear and there are probably more lenses in the basement somewhere . . . oh, and there is all of the darkroom gear . . .

Anyone want to come to a yardsale at my house?

Ed, are you bragging?

I didn't count film stuff, I have a Canon A-1 with a bunch of lenses, and my sister or I will inherit my mom's dark room stuff and the Mamiya... neither of us will use it.  I DO want my great grandfather's old accordian camera, but we'll see, I am not the only one interested in photography in the family.  I would display it in my studio some day on a shelf with some of the old images taken with it.

I would like another lens and all the other goodies, but with my business I really have to watch what I spend.  I know we all do.  I just really have to have something to justify buying it.
Right now with my business what I make that isn't being used to put food on the table and buy soccer tickets (my only other interest) I am spending it on advertising right now... so equipment has to wait, especially because I think I am doing okay with what I have.

I left out my 4x5 and 5x7 kits as well!

Remember, since I shoot Nikon, I have been collecting this stuff since I got my first one in 1978.  I didn't have to scrap everything when I went to AF like the Canon folks.

I know you have been collecting for awhile Ed. And I have had other digital cameras.  I sold a body, lens, and flash to my father in law who used to shoot weddings, but that was a long time ago and he didn't have a digital camera.  He loves it so far.

Someday I will probably end up with a nice collection too, I'm hoping.

I don't have nearly as much as a lot of people here, but I do have enough to suffice:

Cameras/lenses:
Canon 40D
Canon 20D
75-300 5.6
18-50 3.5/5.6
18-55 2.8
one other that I don't remember the #s for

Lighting:
3 Norman LH500 (though one won't flash currently, darn thing)
Silver umbrellas
White umbrellas
3 JTL strobes
3 Smith-Victor 500W continuous lights (gathering dust since they're so darn hot)
A ton of stands
Speedlite 430EX
Speedlite 420EX
42" 5 in 1 reflector

Miscellaneous:
A cheap tripod
A couple of nice bags
Lots of cards, various brands & sizes
A portable backdrop stand
Several backdrops

I think that's it.  I still have a ton of 35mm stuff, but don't use it.  It is now going in my "antique" camera display in my studio.  Along with a few oldie cameras that are just fun to look at.

You and I must have had the same luck last night, Susie.  I tipped over my tripod and broke my D80 and my radio transmitter.  Later in the shoot, for some reason my light meter quit working with any shutter speed over 1/60.  I think I can fix my camera though, hopefully.

Oh No Travis!  I'm sorry.
I broke my camera on the shoot I went on with your wife.  It was my fault I didn't buckle my camera bag and my camera fell out.  I wasn't worried about it, but last night I was looking at it and the little door where the memory card goes was broken, which wouldn't be a big deal, but the camera won't do anything, just gives me a message that the door is open...  Might be fixable, but I do want to replace that camera... so I will have to think about it.

What's wrong with your camera?

What's wrong with your camera?

contact the manufacturer or MAC or somebody and get a quote to fix your camera.

use that as proof you need a new one

find the micro-switch that tells the camera that door is open and glue it down.
poof---spare camera.
