A Portrait Lighting Technique
« on: September 25, 2008, 07:47:07 AM »
In a posting by Susie, in words, I couldn't get my words out about a lighting method.
This portrait was done with two lights, the diagram below shows where the lights were placed and the image shows how she was situated and the effect of the lighting.

Black cards were taped to the lights acting like barn doors, Duct tape can be very useful in desperate times.
Gobo, meaning, a piece of foam core board was used as a blocker of light to the camera lens. The lights in this position are almost directed at the camera, more so, the one to camera left.

Thanks Mike
So I have some questions.
The back two lights aren't the only lights used right?  You have a main, I assume.
How high up are your lights?  Similar height to the main?
The gobo - where is that placed?  in front of the model?

Left light, call it main
Right light, call it hair

Just held a card near the lens, to rid of flare from left light.

Ceiling height, I don't know, maybe 7 feet.

K, I am confused, the main light is behind her?  Where is the light hitting the front of her face coming from?
Sorry, I am a visual person and need things shown to me, so I am sure I am just missing something in the explanation.

That's why I had a hard time explaining.

Hmm, pretend she is facing you, now, tell her to turn to her right 90 degrees, now the light is 45 degrees to her right, causing that rembrandt look to her face.
You are still in the same position, her left side of angled body is to you.

With this one, I slightly moved and was above, standing on a chair.
