I'll go a little opposite on the location suggestion. I've seen a lot of the gas mask shots in every conceivable industrial location. It works, no question about it. I think it needs a new twist.
The straight on, doll look in your other steam punk thread is a good base. The pose gives it a out of the ordinary feel. Kinda like a gas mask and a little black dress combo. So put it even farther out of the ordinary with the location. Shopping for groceries, in a church pew, in a crowded mall, etc. Contrast it with the ordinary and everyday occurrences of life.
I like the idea of models in a mask because it makes them use their body to convey the emotion or story that's needed. Not just their face. That detachment, I think, open up a new arena expand into.
