Latest portrait shoot

Here's a head shot from my latest shoot, I think the tight crop worked well and feel I am starting to understand my new lights better now. Criticism welcome though - as always!

Hi Dave. I'll let the others comment about the lighting, as I'm still learning, too.

However, I do want to say to be careful with such a tight crop. When they go to frame this, her chin will be cut off with the overlap of the matt/frame. Smiley

Did you do any skin post processing?

The lighting is quite nice.  In addition to watching how tighly you crop I would like to see some more light on her hair.  By skimming her hair with a hard light source it will seperate it from the background and make it look more beautiful and anytime we can enhance the beauty of anything on our female subjects they will love us for it and reward us with spending lots of $$$ on our images!

Thanks for the replies, I only did a minor retouch job on the skin, just a little work with healing and clone brushes. Didn't need to add any blur. I had a hair light Benji, unfortunately the slave trigger let me down on this shot, though I do have some others with the light.

Dave,

I have discovered the slave only misfires on the shot the customer wants to purchase.  If the subject blinked, moved, looks dumb or whatever, that will be the shot(s) that the slave fired perfectly!  Big Grin

Nicely done. Smiley Very natural looking.

Haha...another Universal Photography Truth. Smiley

I wish I had a slave unit, but I can't find anything that works with my Minolta. Tongue

If you have a hot shoe you can use the cheap catus wireless triggers. No bells or whistles but they are definately a bargin.

The edit does look good.  The skin tone and everything.  However, I think the makeup is overdone.  I definitely touch up makeup in my shots.  I do darken lashes and contour the face a touch if it needs it, and perhaps add a very very subtle touch of color to cheeks and lips, however, I usually don't add makeup especially colors that weren't originally there.
HOWEVER, it is up to your client and how much creative license you are expected to have.  I wouldn't go changing things just because I thought they looked better if they are something the client will have a definite opinion about.

On the left eye (her right eye) the purple is a little too far into the inside corner of the crease (toward her nose), makeup artists don't put non-neutral color that far unless it is for a theatrical effect.

I sound negative, but I don't mean to.  The color going too far to the center was my only nitpick the other stuff was just discussing ethics, and that's everyone's individual choice.

OH and I forgot to add - Thanks for sharing this example.  I love before and afters and wish everyone would share more.  It helps us all learn and gives us lots of fun stuff to talk about.
