Lighting facial hairLibrary Thread

Davecam's recent thread, showing a young man with facial hair, made me think about how you should light such things. My husband has a full beard, and when I was shooting his portrait, it kept disappearing into the background. But if you use a hairlight on it, won't it cause weird facial shadows? Anyone?

i wouldn't use a hair light for facial hair. . . .

but if you were loosing the separation of the facial hair then i would angle my main light differently, closer to .. or depending on what effect you were going for move the fill light slightly

this is also depending on if you use barn doors or umbrella's or soft box....

you could also not move either light and just try to bracket

The is the perfect situation in which to add a "kicker".  This is similar to a hairlight added to the same side as the main light.  Particularly when you are using short light.

On a subject without facial hair, this will create a specular highlight on the edge of the side of the face.  With facial hair, this will act like a hairlight for the beard.
