Macro setup for bees

Found this on Flickr and thought it fit in well with the macros that we've had posted over the past couple of days.

If you click on the picture it'll take you to Flickr where you can see a few more notes on the setup.

If you go to NabityPhoto's photostream he (I assume) has shots of several lighting setups.

Karen (wife) has an oil painting of a butterfly. A guy was very interested in how she painted it, more like an artist fishing for ideas than a customer. I asked him and he said "I've been painting for years, just can't ever get that kind of details" Karen asked him if he ever painted from photographs. He said he couldn't ever get a butterfly in a perfect position and asked her what she used.

Karen looked up at the guy and just as serious as she could said "Raid"

he left.... [grin]

This is a good setup for products, but, by the looks of it, I find that the lighting maybe too harsh.
As for Insects, NO, this lighting system is too strong.

I know a guy that does a lot of macro work with insects. He catches them live and throws them in a freezer for a couple hours. A tiny bit of super glue will keep them in postion.

I really would like to get some macro shots of insects, but I couldn't bring myself to kill them for the shot.

agreed. Karen actually took the butterfly shot by taking her camera and a remote trigger  out to a bush that attracts butterflies then sat down and read a book glancing up now and then to see if anything was on her flower. She took about 15 perfect insect shots in two hours. (this on film, several years ago)

On the other hand, I could see myself telling someone "Raid" just to see the reaction Cheesy Grin

The freezer doesn't kill most of them. Just kind of slows them down for a while.

With honeybees in a national decline in numbers, I suggest disturbing them as little as possible. Smiley You can have all my spiders, though.  Cheesy
