New Toy - 2tb network drive

Needed a bit more space for backing up and media so I took the drive down to Best Buy to pickup the 2tb USB 3 drive they had on sale. Got there, and for $30 more I could get the same drive except with a gigabit network connection instead of USB.

So now I've got a 2tb (well, 1.8 because of the difference in 1,000mb and 1,024mb) sitting on my network. It's supposed to also let you stream audio and work as an Apple Time Machine backup drive, but I haven't gotten either of those to work yet.

Is it plug n' play into your router, or do you have to go through mapping it to each computer?

There's software that you can install, but after doing that on my desktop I tried to access it directly from my notebook and media center and was able to get to it without the software. It just shows up as a UNC path - \\mybooklive by default. I was able to browse to \\mybooklive with Chrome and do everything that the software does without needing to install.

What I'll probably wind up doing is setting up a share each for my wife and I and map those to a drive so each of us has a drive letter on our computers, but it doesn't have to be done that way. Our media center is setup to just use UNC paths.

It updated its firmware yesterday, and one of the new features was that you're supposed to be able to access your files over the internet like a personal cloud. Haven't figured out that part yet though.

Left my MacBook running over night and it backed up about 60gb via TimeMachine without a hiccup.

The "access from the internet" is kindof silly. You already are accessing it across your network  and the only difference is getting through your firewall. Set up a VPN and you'll be there.

Instead of a VPN tunnel, I do that with TeamViewer its a free for home use remote control with good security.
