Here is a picture of an old barn on my street.

Hi Torie! Sorry the board is so slow at the moment. A lot of us work full time jobs and usually get on during the weekends.

It's hard to tell the detail that you captured in such a small image, but I'm really liking the knotty boards. I'd love to see this where there is more light on the front of the building. What time of day did you shoot this, the shadows seem pretty harsh. Are you able to get closer? There looks to be tons of potential from this location!

I'm not thrilled with your sepia coloring, as it fades strangely in the sky to pink. Maybe back out some of the red might help.

Also, I think it might have been a better image had you included a bit more sky at the top and the left to give the building some breathing room. The point of the roof leads the eye out of the frame.

Again, welcome to PAF!!! I can't wait to see you grow here with the rest of us. Smiley

It's a beautiful image Torie, and one that you should be proud to frame and hang.  I do agree with Marian that there could be some more space to the left of the barn as well as in the sky.  I also agree that the sepia is a little over-the-top.  I would simply try to tone it down (desaturate) some.  Take some of the color out of it; make it look faded.  One other thing, if your original image will allow for you to increase the space on the left side of the image, I would at least try cropping some of the distractions out of the right side of the image.  At least in my opinion, you wouldn't hurt anything to crop right up to the edge of the fence, but be sure to leave the upper roof line intact.  Again, I only think this will balance well if you have the added space on the left side.

As for the light and time of day, I really like what you have here.  If the light were any different I think you would lose much of the character that this old barn has to offer.  I say you timed it just right and exposed it well also.  This just shows that opinions can vary.  As far as harsh shadows go, this is exactly the type of image where harsh lighting is appropriate in my way of thinking.  Harsh lighting is for promoting texture, which you have done a wonderful job of in this image.

Thanks for sharing,
Travis

Just to clarify, I didn't mean that the harsh shadows were bad. I just wanted to know what time of day it was. Smiley

it was about 2:30 pm when i took it. if i were to give more space to the left it would have a bright yellow flatbed truck and a rusted up trailer in front of it in the picture. and yes i can put more sky in the picture.

I think the coolest part of this image is the bladeless windmill on the right. I've seen beat up barns everywhere - I live in Texas after all - but don't think I've ever seen a standing windmill without blades.

Also really dig the sky visible through the roof.

Never been a fan of sepia toning, but that's a personal thing. Some people like it, some don't.

And the levels on the second one look much, much better. The first is very harsh.

I'm thinking a really high contrast grayscale image would look pretty slick, although that's my preference for a lot of images. I've got about a dozen B&W photos framed in my bedroom and they're all fairly high contrast Cheesy Grin

Torie, I like the new crop much better! It makes it a more dynamic image. Smiley
