Hi Cindy All of these are terrific.  You can almost hear the confusion.

What work flow do you prefer to get the separation and the colors to pop out like that?

The 20@60 then 300@0.1/2/3 with USM?  I'm not even going to guess any more.  Wink

Ok, knowing that this might sound stereo typed, but on African Americans, I can normally safely raise the hue/sat by about 25 percert.  Many times, it leaves a nice skin tone, as well as amping the surrounding items.  You can't do this on Caucations because it raises the red channel too much.
In PJ work, you are only allowed the most basic of photo correction.  Sat/Conversion/Dodge and/Burn.  That's it.  You have to be really careful with PJ stuff.

Edited to add:  No sharpening.  That's a big no no on wire.  The mags will do it for you.
The only thing done to the above photos is a sat bump, and a compositional crop.

I need a little help.
What is "old wire" ?
Being a European and not a native speaker, your US/Canadian lingo puzzles me.

Hi Leen,
When I refer to Wire Service, I refer to the pool that photographers go to when submitting photo stories.  Among others, I was a member of Sipa, which was a French Wire.

Here is how you get there.
On your own, go out and find some news.  Contact a wire agent (zuma/sipa/ or ap) and ask them to be your agent.
The Editor will look over your submission (ten or less of news related items) and either be your agent or let you go.
Once your agent accepts you, you pretty much have to do the assignments you are sent on.  I was a little differnt, always doing my own thing.
When you finish, you give the JPEG files via FTP to your wire agency.  If it's good breaking news, they will add you as a headliner.
This is where world wide mags go to shop for photos and stories.  First they find a killer photo, contact the photog, and then round out with a story.
Unless you are a experience junkie with a low living expense, you don't want to do this.  Time Magazine pays $250 per submission, and that the high end.

It's ok Leen,
I know there is a language barrier.

In other words:

Find a killer protest and take some shots.

Call Eric at Sipa and see if he will represent you.

Once uploaded, wait and see how many mags buy the photo.

Cash in.  It's not a lot, but it's enough to keep you honest.

Yep the great pay of a PJ lol, well unless you do get that photo of Elvis working down the chip shop! I'm freelance and prefer to stay that way as it gives me more options that I would have if I was on an agency like Reuters or AP. Thast the good side, the down side is that I am in competiton with Reuters and AP lol!

I submit my work via my great outlook email button that lets the picture editiors now what I am doing, if they want it they can take a feed direct from myself and then I wait for the money to come normally about £90 a photo but can be as low as £30. Local press take the same feed as the big boys of the UK press scene but pay even less haha. I still remember getting a fron page in the Telegraph almost 9 years ago that was the first time I had a front page photo that everyone in the UK woke up to. Its such an amazing feeling. since then I have had the back pages for sports and lots of colume space inside but nothing compairs to that first front page and as you sit down to breakfast you know someone 500 miles away is doing the same. Cindy thanks for letting me hijack lol, was going to comment on the photo individually but they are all great! Some fantastic captures and right in the heart of the action

Well done
