On my backing up soapbox again

Another reminder about your backups.  Make sure that you check that your backup routine is actually working.  I just randomly decided to check and see if the routine that I use to backup databases from my web server (which includes this site) was working like it's supposed to.  The files were all way too small.  I found the problem, and it's now running correctly.  But had I had to restore a backup today my most recent backups would have been about a week old.

I just checked my photo backup routine and it wasn't working either.  The script that backs up my primary drive to an external USB drive has been working but the script that backs up to a remote server had stopped.  So right now I'm watching two terminal windows as databases from this server download to my file server and files from the past 6 weeks get copied from my computer to a remote server.

My backups at work run to an external disk as well, but I use two with the exact same name so I can remove one and connect the other and the server doesn't notice. I do this once a week which is my time to check the "old" disk has everything its supposed to.

Bob, I like that idea too.  I went back and forth about getting an external or an internal which would have been cheaper.  The external lets me grab in a hurry if I ever need to. 

12 hours later the script has run and my stuff is safely on a computer 150 miles away from me.  I guess the next step is to figure out how to have the script email the results to me rather than running silently so I can see if there's a problem without having to check.

My off site backup is the portable drive I take home.
